MAAC Baseball Championship Begins New Era on Staten Island
STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) embarks on a historic feat as the conference hosts its annual Baseball Championship at Richmond County Bank Ballpark for the first time ever.
“The MAAC membership is excited about the opportunity to partner with the Staten Island Yankees and have its baseball championship played at Richmond County Bank Ballpark,” noted MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “The site will be a terrific experience for the MAAC’s student-athletes, their fans, and families. We look forward to enhancing the brand awareness of MAAC Baseball in the tri-state region with this new partnership.”
On July 26, 2017, the MAAC announced a three-year partnership with the Staten Island Yankees to host the MAAC Baseball Championship from 2018-20, at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, home of the Single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
Nearly 10 months later, the first pitch of the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship was delivered today at noon, when rivals No. 3 Canisius College and No. 6 Niagara University went head-to-head.
Richmond County Bank Ballpark seats approximately 7,100 fans and has been the home to the six-time New York Penn League Champions since June 24, 2001. The ballpark, has hosted concerts, food festivals, and a number of other ancillary events. It overlooks lower Manhattan and has one of the best views in all of Minor League Baseball.
The 2018 Championship takes place May 23-26. All games are set to air on ESPN+, which marks the first time in conference history that every game of the MAAC Baseball Championship will be broadcasted on an ESPN platform.
As part of the new three-year venture, MAAC member institutions will serve as co-hosts for the event on a rotating cycle each year. This year, the championship is co-hosted by Fairfield University, Iona College, and Siena College. Fairfield will oversee media operations, Iona will oversee the broadcast operations and productions of all games on ESPN+, while Siena handles athletic training.
The 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship is the 25
th in conference history. This year marks the 20
th time that the championship has been held in the state of New York. The MAAC has previously hosted its Baseball Championship at Sal Maglie Stadium, Dutchess Stadium, First Energy Park, ARM & HAMMER Park (formerly known as Waterfront Park), Joe Bruno Stadium, and Heritage Park.
