Day Two of 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship Concludes With Four Teams Remaining

No. 3 Canisius (33-20) defeated No. 2 Quinnipiac (25-29), 11-3, to advance in the winner’s bracket of the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship. The Griffs will face No. 1 Monmouth University tomorrow, May 25, at noon on ESPN+. The winner of that contest moves on to the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship game on Saturday, May 25, at noon.
Canisius Notes:
- Sophomore pitcher Will Frank earned the win, his fourth of the season. He tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, surrendered two hits, and struck out four.
- Junior outfielder Mark McKenna went 4-5 at the plate with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. McKenna tied a season and career-high with four hits. He set a new season-high with three RBI, which also tied his career-high.
- The Griffs broke the game open with a six-run top of the ninth inning. Red-shirt senior utility Liam Wilson recorded an RBI double in the ninth. The two-bagger was his 26th of the season, which is a new MAAC single-season record.
- Canisius extended its winning streak to six games in a row, which is a season-high. The Griffs previously won six-straight games February 17 through March 2.
- Redshirt sophomore catcher William Krull went 2-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored.
- Senior infielder Ryan Stekl and junior infielder Conner Morro each went 2-4 at the plate.
Quinnipiac Notes:
- Junior outfielder Liam Scafariello went 1-3 with a solo home run in the second inning. The homer was his 14th of the season.
- Sophomore infielder Evan Vulgamore went 2-4 at the dish with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.
- Senior infielder Ben Gibson went 1-3 with a ground rule double which drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Senior pitcher Taylor Luciani took the loss. He went 5.0 innings, allowed four runs, earned, on seven hits. He struck out three and walked six, which was a season-high.

No. 5 Marist (27-22) knocked off No. 6 Niagara (24-27), 6-3, in their second game of the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship. The Red Foxes advanced to play Siena in an elimination game that immediately followed Game 5 of the MAAC Baseball Championship.
Marist Notes:
- Red-shirt junior Tony Romanelli earned the win his fifth of the season. He tossed 8.0 innings, allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits. He struck out five and walked five in the 119-pitch effort.
- Red-shirt junior catcher Chris Tracz went 2-4 at the plate with three RBI. Tracz drove in three runs with a bases clearing double in the bottom of the seventh inning. His three RBI were a season-high.
- Senior infielder Andrew Rouse went 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Rouse singled home a run in the bottom of the second inning.
- Five Red Foxes registered multi-hit performances (Armitage, Tracz, Taveras, Kocinski, and Rouse).
- Junior Brandon Bonomo picked up the save, his first of the season. He pitched 0.2 innings of relief and struck out one.
Niagara Notes:
- The Purple Eagles were eliminated from the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship after making their first appearance since 2006.
- 2018 MAAC Player of the Year, junior Greg Cullen went 1-1 with an RBI and three walks. Cullen doubled in a run in the top of the eighth inning. He finished the season with a .458 batting average and is currently the nation’s leading hitter.
- Senior pitcher Zachary Kolodziejski took the loss. He went 1.0 innings, allowed three runs, earned, on six hits. He struck out two and walked two.
- Freshman Ben Erwin pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. He surrendered three hits and walked one.

No. 4 Siena (21-34) defeated No. 5 Marist (27-23), 9-5, to advance in the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship. The Saints will play No. 2 Quinnipiac in an elimination game tomorrow, May 25, at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
Siena Notes:
- Senior infielder Joe Drpich went 3-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Both of his home runs were solo shots. It was his second multi-home run game of the year and first since April 14, against Quinnipiac. Drpich hit his first home run in the bottom of the third inning to get Siena on the board. He then homered in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut Marist’s lead to 4-2. The senior tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double to left. The homers were Drpich’s 11th and 12th of the season.
- Senior infielder Jordan Bishop went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Bishop drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- Senior outfielder Dan Lowndes drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth.
- The Saints scored nine unanswered runs after trailing 4-0. They tallied five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning alone.
- Junior Tom Sutera earned the win, his third of the season. He tossed 6.1 innings in relief and allowed one run, earned, on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.
- Siena took four out of five games from Marist this season including two MAAC Championship games.
- Seventh-straight MAAC Championship appearance in which they won multiple games.
Marist Notes:
- Sophomore Tyler Kapuscinski got the Red Foxes on the board with a grand slam in the top of the third inning. The home run was his third of the season. He finished the game 4-5 and drove in all five of Marist’s runs. The five RBI were a season-high.
- The Red Foxes have been eliminated from the 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship.
- Junior Brandon Bonomo took the loss his second of the season. Bonomo came on in relief and did not record an out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- Sophomore Conor McNamara was credited with the no-decision. He went 5.0 innings, allowed three runs, earned, on seven hits. He struck out four and walked three.
