Canisius & Detroit Mercy Advance to 2018 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship Game

2018 Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals

No. 4 Canisius College (7-8) defeated No. 1 Quinnipiac University (9-6), 11-10, in overtime to advance to the 2018 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship game. Senior attack Ryan McKee scored the game-winning goal with 2:59 to play in the overtime period. The Griffs take on No. 2 Detroit Mercy in the Men’s Lacrosse title game on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m. on ESPNU.
Canisius Notes:
- The Griffs return to the MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship game for the third time in their history and the first time since 2012. Canisius is (2-0) all-time in Men’s Lacrosse Championship finals.
- The win marked the first time since 2013 that the No. 4 seed knocked off the No. 1 seed in the semifinal round. The last team to do so was No. 4 Detroit Mercy, who defeated No. 1 Marist, 7-6, on May 4, 2013.
- McKee’s game-winner was his 32nd goal of the season, he was assisted by 2018 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Connor Kearnan. McKee finished the semifinal contest with a pair of goals and a ground ball.
- Kearnan tallied five points (two goals, three assists), and two ground balls. Kearnan assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime, as well as the game-tying goal with 0:12 seconds to play in regulation.
- Senior midfield Steven Coss tallied a game-high six points (two goals, four assists).
- Senior goalie Liam Ganzhorn picked up the win in net. He finished that game with 12 saves and two ground balls.
Quinnipiac Notes:
- The Bobcats finished the season (9-6, 6-0 MAAC) and earned the 2018 Men’s Lacrosse Regular Season Championship.
- 2018 Face-off Specialist of the Year, senior midfield Will Vitelli went 19-25 on face-offs today and picked up six ground balls.
- Junior attack Foster Cuomo notched three points (two goals, one assist) and four ground balls.
- Senior midfield Ryan Corcoran scored a game-high three goals.

No. 2 Detroit Mercy (9-6) knocked off No. 3 Monmouth University, 12-9, to advance to the 2018 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship game. The Titans erased a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter en route to the semifinal victory. Detroit Mercy faces No. 4 Canisius in the Men’s Lacrosse title game on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m. on ESPNU.
Detroit Mercy Notes:
- The Titans move on to their third MAAC Championship game in program history and first since 2013 when they claimed their only title. Detroit Mercy is (1-1) all-time in championship title games.
- Detroit Mercy trailed, 9-5, with 8:31 to play in the fourth quarter before closing out the game on a 7-0 scoring run.
- Junior attack Matthew Vangalen totaled a game-high five points (three goals, two assists) in the win. Vangalen scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals in the fourth quarter.
- Freshman attack Brett Erskine finished with three points (two goals, one assist), and a game-high seven ground balls.
- Junior midfield Patrick Walsh scored a pair of goals, his second gave the Titans a two-goal lead in the fourth.
- Red-shirt freshman goalie Logan Shamblin earned the win in net. He recorded 11 saves and picked up one ground ball.
Monmouth Notes:
- The Hawks finished the season (7-8, 4-2 MAAC).
- Monmouth had a pair register multi-goal games. Sophomore midfield Zach Clements tallied two goals and an assist, while red-shirt freshman midfield Casey Kimmel found the back of the net twice.
- Seven different Hawks registered goals in the game.
- Freshman goalie Noah Lode stopped 16 shots and picked up one ground ball.
- The Hawks edged the Titans in total shots (41-31) and saves (16-11).
