Siena's Madonna & Miller Named ECAC Second Team All-Stars
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Baseball battery mates Phil Madonna and Tommy Miller continue to receive much deserved recognition following their stellar springs. The duo have been tabbed Eastern College Athletic Conference Second Team All-Stars.
This marks the first time in program history that the Saints have boasted multiple All-ECAC selections in the same season. Overall, Madonna and Miller mark Siena’s sixth and seventh All-ECAC honorees, respectively, since 2005.
A former walk-on, Madonna becomes the first primary catcher in Siena Baseball history to earn All-ECAC recognition. Just last week, the Gibsonia, Pennsylvania product was also heralded as the Saints’ first All-MAAC catcher in a decade, and the first to receive First Team All-MAAC acclaim in 16 years. Madonna was named Siena Baseball’s first-ever Senior CLASS Award candidate earlier this spring, and was a two-time Johnny Bench Award Watch List candidate.
Madonna hit a career-best .319 this season encompassing 54 appearances including 52 starts behind the plate. The Saints’ senior captain currently ranks as the 34th toughest hitter to strikeout nationally averaging just one strikeout per 11.9 at-bats, and also led the team with nine sacrifice bunts and five sacrifice flies. Defensively, Madonna threw out an even 25% of would-be base stealers (17-68), while also registering a team-high three pickoffs. He concludes his career having posted a strong .290 batting average over 174 games (147 starts), and cut down 24.1% on the base paths.
Siena’s staff ace over each of his first three seasons donning the Green and Gold, Miller becomes the first pitcher in program history to receive All-ECAC recognition. The Castleton, New York native was previously named a First Team All-MAAC selection after being recognized as a two-time MAAC Pitcher of the Week (Apr. 3, Apr. 10). Miller currently stands in a three-way tie for the national lead with six complete games, and leads the MAAC with 104.2 inning pitched while also tying for the conference lead with a pair of shutouts.
The junior southpaw ranks second overall in the MAAC in wins (nine), tied for fifth in strikeouts (84), and sixth in ERA (3.70). Including the MAAC Tournament, Miller recorded wins in eight of his nine starts vs. conference foes this spring which included all six of his complete games, while also helping Siena lead the league with a 3.34 ERA during conference play. In MAAC-only games, he tied for the conference lead in both strikeouts (54) and shutouts (two), while ranking seventh in ERA (2.64).
Miller’s 104.2 innings pitched this spring ranked as the second most in program single season history, while he also stood tied for second in wins (nine), fifth in strikeouts (84), and tied for fifth in complete games (six). He will enter his senior season next spring already ranking second in program history in victories (20), tied for fifth in games started (42), sixth in innings pitched (268.0), and eighth in strikeouts (178).
Madonna and Miller helped guide the Saints to the program’s sixth straight 20-win season this spring. Siena qualified for its sixth MAAC Tournament appearance over the past eight seasons, and won multiple postseason contests for a seventh straight appearance.
