Monmouth University (14-2-3, 10-0 MAAC) fell in heartbreaking fashion to Ivy League opponent Brown University (14-1-3, 6-0-1) 4-1 in penalty kicks in the First Round of the 2019 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. The match featured two of the nation’s top defensive teams, who rode a scoreless tie all the way to the shootout. Brown will go on to play the winner of today’s 6:00 p.m. matchup between Florida State and South Alabama.
 
Monmouth Notes
  • Amanda Knaub started in net for the Hawks. Knaub entered the day with the most shutouts in the nation (14), best goals against average (.215), and third best save percentage (.917). The Hawks defense as a unit have allowed the fewest goals in Division I (4) coming into today’s contest.
  • Madie Gibson nearly scored the first goal of the match with 15 minutes left in the first half, but couldn’t bury a hopping ball in the box.  
  • Dana Scheriff was robbed by Brown’s Thompson with just under two minutes remining in the first half. Thompson made a diving save off a Scheriff header to keep the game scoreless at the midway point.
  • Monmouth outshot Brown 15-8 in regulation, with shots on goal also siding towards the Hawks 6-4.
  • The Hawks recoded an addition four shots in the two overtime periods.
  • Knaub finished with four saves throughout the afternoon.

  • Kayla Thompson, a transfer from West Virginia, got the nod for the Bears in net. Thompson ranked fourth in the country in save percentage (.900) and seventh in goals against average (.370)
  • Sydney Cummings collected a yellow card late in the first half, challenging Monmouth’s Jesi Rossman at midfield.
  • The Bears offense came to life late in the first half, coming a few feet wide of opening the scoring off a redirect in the Monmouth box.
  • The Bears finished with 10 shots, four on net.
  • Thompson made six saves on the day, as well as two saves in penalty kicks.
