Iona's Rickey McGill Named MBWA Player Of The Week

Rickey McGill has been named the MBWA Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Over three games last week McGill averaged 21.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He shot 47.7% from the floor, 50.0% from beyond the arc and 90.9% from the free throw line. The Gaels won all three games against Quinnipiac, Manhattan and Canisius, extending their winning streak to six games. The Maroon & Gold climbed atop the MAAC standings and stand in first place with an 11-6 league record.
On Tuesday, Feb. 19 the Gaels bested Quinnipiac on its home court in Hamden, CT. McGill scored 21 points in 36 minutes, shooting 8-of-15 from the floor and 4-for-7 from deep. He had three assists, three rebounds and a steal in the win. McGill was one of three Gaels to score 20+ points in the 81-77 decision.
On Friday, Feb. 22 on the road against Iona's biggest rival Manhattan, McGill scored 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting. He made three three-point field goals, including a crucial dagger late in the second half. McGill had a team-high four assists and was one of three with a pair of steals.
The week finished up with on Sunday, Feb. 24 at home against Canisius. On senior day at the Hynes Center, McGill poured home a season-high 30 points in a full 40 minutes of action. He shot 8-for-16 from the floor and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Not just scoring, the Spring Valley, NY native had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. During the course of the game, McGill registered his 200
th career steal, becoming just the sixth player in program history to reach that milestone. Iona took down Canisius, 87-80, claiming the top spot in the league standings heading into the final week of the regular season.
On Monday, Feb. 25, McGill was also named the MAAC Player of the Week by the league and by College Sports Madness. His previous weekly honors include MAAC Player of the Week (Jan. 7), two MBWA Honorable Mentions (Jan. 8 & Jan. 15).
As of Tuesday, Feb. 26, McGill ranks seventh in the league in scoring (15.6), second in assists (5.2), sixth in free throw percentage (.760), first in steals (2.3), third in assist/turnover ratio (1.8) and first in minutes played (37.3) per game.
The Maroon & Gold play their final regular season game on Friday, Mar. 1 against the Rider Broncs in Lawrenceville, NJ. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game is being broadcasted live on
ESPN+.
