2018-19 MAAC Men's Basketball All-MAAC Teams Revealed
EDISON, NJ - The 2018-19 MAAC Men’s Basketball All-MAAC Teams were announced on Monday. The All-MAAC First, Second, and Third Teams were all voted on by the leagues head coaches.
The All-MAAC First Team is made up of Canisius College’s Takal Molson, Iona College’s EJ Crawford and Rickey McGill, Quinnipiac University’s Cameron Young, and Siena College’s Jalen Pickett.
Young was a unanimous choice for the All-MAAC First Team. Young led the MAAC in scoring this season at 23 points per game. The graduate student held a 5.2 points per game advantage over the rest of the league. The California native poured in 55 points in a triple-overtime win at Siena on February 17. The 55 points established a new single-game MAAC scoring record, a Times Union Center scoring record, and was the most in a NCAA game this season. That performance helped Young earn National Player of the Week from CBS Sports. Young also broke his own Quinnipiac Division I scoring record with 666 points that he set last season. For the season, Young earned four MAAC Player of the Week honors—all coming since January 14.
The sophomore Molson earns All-MAAC First Team honors after leading Canisius in scoring at 17 points a game. Molson, who was the 2017-18 MAAC Rookie of the Year, increased his scoring average, rebounding average, and free throw percentage in his second season with the Golden Griffins. The Buffalo, NY native scored in double figures in 28-of-30 games this season, including a career- and season-high 28 points against Niagara on February 27. During league play, Molson was third in the MAAC in scoring at 17.3 points per game and 10th in rebounding at 5.9.
McGill earns All-MAAC First Team honors after earning Second Team honors last season as a junior. The Spring Valley, NY native averaged 15.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game to help the Gaels claim their first outright MAAC Regular Season Title since the 2014-15 season. The senior averaged 16.9 points, 5.0 assists, and 2.4 steals per game in MAAC play, which placed him in the top four of each of those categories. McGill was third to Pickett and Young in minutes played in league games at 37.8.
Crawford is another member of the top five in scoring during league play to make the All-MAAC First Team. The junior was second to Young’s 25.5 a game average at 18.8 points per game. The Connecticut native was also efficient, shooting 53-percent from the floor and 85-percent from the free throw line against MAAC foes. Crawford scored 10-plus points in 25-of-28 games this season; including a season-high 28 against Fairfield. The junior also had 13 other games of 20-plus points.
The first-year Saint, Pickett, earns All-MAAC First Team honors while also being a unanimous choice on the All-Rookie Team. Pickett claimed 10 Rookie of the Week honors this season, which ties a MAAC record and is the third-most in NCAA history. In MAAC play, Pickett averaged 16.1 points, 6.4 assists and 2.1 steals, and added a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio. Pickett was named National Freshman of the Week on February 19 after averaging 28.0 points, 8.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks while shooting an even 50-percent from the field. That week included a 46 point and 13 assist performance in a triple-overtime loss to Quinnipiac. The 46 points are tied for second-most in a league game in MAAC history. Pickett is the first freshman since Lionel Simmons of La Salle in 1986-87 to make the first team as a freshman.
The All-MAAC Second Team features; Tajuan Agee of Iona, Niagara University’s Marvin Prochet, Quinnipiac’s Rich Kelly, Rider University’s Stevie Jordan, and Evan Fisher of Siena.
Malik Johnson of Canisius, Brian Parker of Marist College, Diago Quinn from Monmouth University, Frederick Scott of Rider, and Davauhnte Turner from Saint Peter’s University comprised the All-MAAC Third Team.
