2019 MAAC Men's Lacrosse All-MAAC Teams & Major Awards Announced
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The 2019 MAAC Men's Lacrosse All-MAAC Teams and Major Award Winners were announced on Wednesday. Award recipients were honored Wednesday evening at the league’s annual awards show, which was on the campus of Marist College.
Senior Matthew Vangalen of the University of Detroit Mercy is the Offensive Player of the Year. The senior led the Titans, and the MAAC in points (26) and assists (20) in league play this season. Vangalen broke his school record for points in a single season with 55 this season.
Detroit Mercy's Logan Shamblin was named Defensive Player of the Year. The sophomore goalkeeper averaged 12 saves a game, which ranked Shamblin 20th in the country. In MAAC play, Shamblin was tops in save percentage at 61.6-percent and saves per game at 14. Shamblin also collected three Defensive Player of the Week awards.
Canisius College's Jacob Buck picked up Rookie of the Year honors. Buck led the Golden Griffins in scoring during the regular season with 41 points on 27 goals and 14 assists. The Rochester, New York native had eight multi-goal games including three games of four goals. Buck was also a four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week.
The BSN Sports MAAC Coach of the Year is Marist College's, Keegan Wilkinson. It is the third coach of the year honor for Wilkinson with the first coming back in 2013. Wilkinson led the Red Foxes to a 6-1 league record and the 2019 MAAC Regular Season Title.
Peyton Smith of Marist is the Faceoff Specialist of the Year. Smith was the unanimous choice as faceoff specialist of the year by the league's head coaches. The junior led the MAAC with a 64.7-percent success rate on faceoffs. That rate put Smith seventh in Division I.
The Long-Stick Midfielder of the Year is Paul Manuzak of Detroit Mercy. Manuszak picked up 4.29 ground ball per game overall and 4.57 in league play. Offensively, the sophomore added four goals and three assists.
Number 1 seed Marist, No. 2 Quinnipiac, No. 3 Detroit Mercy, and No. 4 Canisius make up this season’s championship field. Marist is the host this season at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field, May 2-4. The semifinals on May 2 will air on ESPN+, and Saturday's championship game will air on ESPNU.
