Marist Wins 2019 MAAC Women’s Rowing Championship
PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, NJ – For the first time since 2013, Marist College has won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Rowing Championship. Marist placed second in the I Fours, and won the II Eights and I Eights to take home the title with 53 points.
In the I Four Grand Final, defending champion Jacksonville University (7:58.285) captured first ahead of second place Marist (8:01.261) and third place Drake University (8:20.890).
In the II Eight Grand Final, the Red Foxes (7:08.267) earned gold by defeating second place Jacksonville (7:18.529) and third place Robert Morris University (7:26.521).
In the final race of the day, the I Eight Grand Final, the Red Foxes beat out the Dolphins by nearly nine seconds with a time of 6:47.529 to clinch their first MAAC Rowing Championship in six years. Stetson University finished behind Jacksonville to take third with a time of 7:00.325.
Finishing behind Marist in the championship standings was Jacksonville with 49 points. Drake took third, followed by Stetson in fourth, with 37 and 32 points respectively. Robert Morris finished in fifth place with 30 points and Canisius College took sixth with 22 points. Finishing in seventh place was Fairfield University with 21 points, followed by Manhattan College with 19. Rounding out the leaderboard was Sacred Heart University with seven points.
Following the championship, the 2019 MAAC Women’s Rowing Major Awards were announced. The 2019 MAAC Women’s Rowing Coach of the Year is Marist’s Tom Sanford. This is the second time that Sanford has led the Red Foxes to the NCAA Rowing Championship.
The All-MAAC First Team is comprised of 13 student-athletes from each team’s I Eight boats, and the All-MAAC Second team consists of 14 I Eight student-athletes. Both All-MAAC Teams are listed below.
