Monmouth Men & Women Lead MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships After Day One
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – After the first day of action at the 2019 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Monmouth University men and women are atop the leaderboard. Rounding out the top three teams on the men’s side are Iona College and Rider University. On the women’s side, Rider holds second and Iona sits in third place.
The day saw three MAAC records broken; the men’s 3000M steeplechase, men’s 10,000M, and the women’s 10,000M. Iona’s Johannes Motschmann claimed the 3000M steeplechase record, with teammate Ehab El-Sandali taking the 10,000M record. Fellow Gael Sophie Murphy took the women’s 10,000M record.

Men’s Day One Field Results
- In the men’s hammer throw, Enrique Martinez from Manhattan College took gold with a mark of 58.62 meters. Rider’s Matthew Kraemer took second with a distance of 56.43 meters, and Monmouth’s Montel Johnson finished in third at 55.82 meters.
- Monmouth’s Khalid Slocum won the men’s long jump with a jump of 7.44 meters. Jelani Pierre of Iona College took silver (7.40m), and Ayomide Oyewole of Rider was third (7.21m).
- Monmouth took the top two spots in the men’s pole vault, with Randy Showmaker and Matthew Isaacson recording marks of 4.55 meters and 4.40 meters, respectively. Joe Egri from Saint Peter’s University placed third with a judge’s decision of 4.40 meters.
- Mark Orlando from Monmouth won gold in the men’s javelin throw with a toss of 65.80 meters, followed by Rider’s Anthony Ragusa in second at 64.36 meters. Monmouth’s Peter Flacco finished third with a throw of 63.93 meters.
Women’s Day One Field Results
- In the women’s hammer throw, Rider’s Ashley Berry won gold by posting a mark of 52.60 meters. Manhattan freshman Nina Bjorkman placed second (52.22m), and Quinnipiac’s Carly Timpson took third with (50.13m).
- Monmouth took gold and silver again, this time in the women’s long jump, with Patrice Baston recording a jump of 5.62 meters and Mariah Hubbard at 5.59 meters. Manhattan’s Lisa Warfvinge took home bronze with a jump of 5.49 meters.
- Lauren Saifi of Monmouth won the women’s pole vault by clearing 3.40 meters. Rider’s Daniella Izzo cleared 3.25 meters to win silver, and Monmouth’s Taylor Clark took third with 3.10 meters.
- Monmouth swept the podium in the women’s javelin throw with Danielle Steff winning with a distance of 49.10 meters, Stephanie Roones placing second with 41.33 meters, and Kristin Krier taking bronze with 41.00 meters.
Men’s Day One Track Results
- Iona’s Johannes Motschmann set a new MAAC record in the men’s 3000M steeplechase, taking gold with a time of 8:44.61. Siena’s William Randall took second at 9:03.92 and Iona’s Brian Warsh earned bronze with a mark of 9:18.39.
- Ehab El-Sandali set another MAAC record for Iona today, winning the men’s 10,000M in 29:16.15. Fellow Gaels Jack O’Leary and Gilbert Kiuri followed, finishing in 29:21.96 and 30:10.46, respectively.
Women’s Day One Track Results
- Iona’s Jessica Scheriff won the women’s 3000M steeplechase with a mark of 10:21.83, with Rider’s Peri Pavicic taking silver at 10:41.72. Kaleigh Roberts from Quinnipiac won bronze with a time of 10:44.43.
- Sophie Murphy of Iona set a new MAAC record in the women’s 10,000M with a time of 35:21.03. Marist’s Gianna Tedeschi took home the silver in 35:26.65, and Iona’s Orlaith Moynihan won bronze with a time of 36:29.30.
