EDISON, N.J. (Sept. 17, 2019) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced that Oreoluwa Cherebin (Fairfield University ’19) and Arthur Bertrand (Saint Peter’s University ’19) have been awarded the 2019 Bob McCloskey Insurance MAAC Postgraduate Scholar-Athlete Scholarship.

Bob McCloskey Insurance (BMI) provides annual postgraduate scholarships to two former student-athletes from the league’s member institutions. The intent of the scholarships is to promote and encourage academically and athletically accomplished student-athletes to continue their education by attending graduate school.

As part of the selection process, the committee evaluates athletic and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership.

“Both Oreoluwa Cherebin and Arthur Bertrand exemplify the conference’s commitment to excellence in academics and athletics,” said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “The MAAC congratulates them both for earning the BMI scholarship and looks forward to seeing all they accomplish as they continue their postgraduate studies and beyond. I also want to thank BMI for their continued support of higher education.”

Cherebin graduated in May 2019 from Fairfield, where she studied Chemistry and was a three-year member of the women’s swimming and diving team. The Grenada native represented her home country at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and the World Swimming Championships in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Cherebin was involved on campus as a Resident Assistant and a member of the Black Student Union. She was named to the MAAC All-Academic team in 2018 and the Dean’s List in Fall 2016 and Spring 2019.

“I am very honored to receive this scholarship. Making the adjustment from Fairfield to my graduate program has not been easy. This scholarship will definitely help me settle in quicker and allow me to completely focus on school,” said Cherebin. “I’m grateful to the MAAC for this scholarship and I miss every second of competing as a Stag.”

Bertrand graduated Summa Cum Laude from Saint Peter’s with his Bachelor of Science in International Business & Trade. He was a two-year member of the swimming and diving team, as well as a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Delta Sigma Pi. Bertrand earned MAAC All-Academic honors in 2019.

“I feel very honored to be one of the recipients of the Bob McCloskey Insurance Scholarship,” said Bertrand. “It rewards years of hard work in the pool and in the classroom. It also lifts weight off my shoulders as it helps me and my family financially.”

Cherebin begins her postgraduate study at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis with a major in Chemistry. Bertrand remains at Saint Peter’s, where he is pursuing his master’s degree in Business Analytics and serving as an assistant coach with the swimming and diving team.
