MAAC Baseball Championship to Stay in Staten Island
EDISON, N.J. (Sept. 5, 2019) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced today a contract extension with the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George to host the MAAC Baseball Championship through the 2023 season. Richmond County Bank Ballpark, the home of the Staten Island Yankees, has hosted the MAAC Championship the past two years.
“The Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George has proven to be an outstanding host venue for the annual MAAC Baseball Championship the past two seasons thanks to the operations assistance of the Staten Island Yankees and the member schools that facilitate broadcasting, game operations, and training room duties with the MAAC staff,” notes MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “The location emphasizes the MAAC’s ties to New York City and provides the conference’s student-athletes and fans breathtaking views of the New York Harbor, lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn waterfront.”
Quinnipiac University claimed the school’s first MAAC Championship this May with a 6-5 win over Fairfield University in 13 innings. Evan Vulgamore scored the championship-winning run in the bottom of the 13th on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Canisius College captured the first ever MAAC Championship in Staten Island the year prior, defeating Monmouth University 11-0.
“The MAAC has been a tremendous partner over the past two years and we are excited to continue hosting the MAAC Baseball Championship at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George for years to come,” said Staten Island Yankees General Manager T.J. Jahn. “We are proud to have the opportunity to host these talented student-athletes, coaches, and administrators as they compete each year to become conference champions.”
Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George gives MAAC student-athletes the opportunity to play on a professionally maintained field. The venue has served as the home of the Staten Island Yankees since 2001, and is known for its quality as well as the picturesque view of Manhattan in right-center field.
“Richmond County Bank Ballpark provides the MAAC with one of the best collegiate baseball championship venues in the country,” said John Maddock, head of the MAAC Baseball Committee. “The spectacular view of the New York City skyline over the right and centerfield walls is difficult for any championship facility to match.”
The 2020 MAAC Baseball Championship is set for May 20-23. Stay up to date with all MAAC baseball action by following @MAACSports on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
