Atlantic City, N.J. (March 11, 2019) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced the 2019-20 Major Award winners, as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.

Rider University’s Stella Johnson was named the 2019-20 MAAC Women’s Player of the Year. Johnson entered the season as the defending MAAC Player of the Year as well as the Preseason Player of the Year. Johnson claimed the regular season scoring title among all NCAA Division I players after averaging 24.4 points per game. Along with her scoring accolades, the senior also led the MAAC this season in steals, averaging 2.9 per game, and led in time on the court, averaging 37.0 minutes. The stellar senior’s top performances came early in the season at the MAAC/ASUN Challenge where she posted 41 points against Lipscomb and 39 against North Florida en route to being named the weekend’s MVP. Johnson was named the MAAC Pepsi Zero Player of the Week a record breaking ten times, including the final four weeks of the season, in leading the Rider Broncs to the team’s first ever regular season title and the top spot in the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship.

Rider’s Amari Johnson was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. Johnson ranked second in the MAAC averaging 10.8 rebounds per game, 2.3 rebounds off the offensive boards and 8.4 (MAAC leading) off the defensive boards. The senior averaged 24.1 minutes per game on the court for the Broncs, ranking seventh in the league. Over 29 games, the Red Lion, Pennsylvania native tallied 41 blocked shots to put her fourth on the MAAC list. Johnson was named to the All-MAAC Second Team earlier in the week after her defensive presence helped land the Broncs the team’s first regular season championship in school history.

The 2019-20 MAAC Rookie of the Year is Manhattan College’s Emily LaPointe. LaPointe made herself a presence in her first year in Riverdale, leading the Jaspers and all MAAC rookies in scoring with 12.5 per game. After beginning the first three games of the year on the sidelines, Lapointe went on to start the next 26-straight. Averaging 30.7 minutes of time on the court, LaPointe was named the MAAC Pepsi Zero Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week eight times. The freshman also averaged 3.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.1 steals in her rookie campaign.

Maggie McIntyre of Niagara University was named the 2019-20 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year. McIntyre was a deep threat for the Purple Eagles this season, hitting 63 from beyond the arc to place her fifth in the conference and first on her team. Her 63 buckets came on 167 attempts to give her a three-point field goal percentage of .377, good for seventh in the MAAC. McIntyre logged 704 minutes on the court this season, starting seven contests for Niagara. Her 8.8 points per game ranked third among the Purple Eagles, helping the team claim the No. 8 seed in the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championships.
