Top Two Seeds Advance to Semifinals of 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship
Atlantic City, N.J. (March 11, 2019) – Top seeded Rider University (26-4, 18-2 MAAC) and second seeded Marist College (26-4, 18-2) both claimed early afternoon victories to advance to the semifinals of the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship.

Key Moments:
- Niagara gained the advantage in a basket-happy first quarter, taking a 20-18 lead over the top seed.
- Player of the Year Stella Johnson accounted for 14 of Rider’s 18 points in the first frame.
- With time winding down MAAC Sixth Player of the Year Maggie McIntyre drained her fifth three-pointer of the game to bring the Purple Eagles within one, 44-43.
- Stella Johnson didn’t slow down at the start of the second half, dropping 13 in the third quarter.
- Lea Favre stepped up for the Broncs in the final frame, scoring eight of the team’s 16 points.
Notables:
- Stella Johnson set a new MAAC championship record with 37 points scored, topping the previous mark set by Iona’s Damika Martinez in 2013. The senior added 14 rebounds to secure the double-double.
- Niagara’s McIntyre hit seven threes throughout the day, tying the MAAC championship record set in 2004 by Saint Peter’s Tyonna Vance.
- Johnson and McIntyre combined to score 60 of the game’s 153 points.
- McIntyre’s 23-point performance led the Purple Eagles, followed by Jai Moore and Emerald Ekpiteta with 14.
- Lea Favre added 16 points and eight rebounds for Rider, Amari Johnson added 17 points and seven rebounds.

The top seeded Broncs will move on to face the winner of tomorrow’s matchup between No. 4 Manhattan and No. 5 Quinnipiac. The semifinal game will take place on Friday at 11:00 a.m.

- Sarah Barcello knocked down a buzzer-beating three to end the first quarter with the Red Foxes up 19-9
- Molly Smith followed in her teammate’s footsteps, ending the half with another buzzer-beater from deep to send Marist to the locker room with a commanding 40-22 lead.
- Marist came out of the locker room on the same note they left on, scoring 19 in the third quarter.
- The Hawks finished the game strong, outscoring the Red Foxes 11-9 in the final quarter.
Notables:
- The Red Foxes completed the season sweep of the Hawks with the win.
- Leading all scorers was Marist’s Rebekah Hand with 18 points.
- Four different Red Foxes scored in double-digits in Hand, Alana Gilmer (15), Grace Vander Weide (14), and Willow Duffell (10).
- Leading the Hawks was Rosa Graham with 11 points and two rebounds and Akilah Jennings with 10 points, two rebounds, and an assist.

Marist moves on to the semifinals of the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship. The Red Foxes will tip-off on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against either No. 3 Fairfield or No. 6 Siena.
