Edison, N.J. (April 18, 2020) – Siena College defeated Marist College 14-11 to claim the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Championship, the third to be completed of the 2020 MAAC Esports Championships presented by New Jersey Army National Guard. Siena was able to come back from an early deficit to knock off the Marist program, which won this afternoon’s Rocket League title and last night’s League of Legends title.

The title marks the third of the 2020 MAAC Esports Championships presented by New Jersey Army National Guard, and the first MAAC Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Championship in history.

Siena’s Nick “Knight” Galvam was named the 2020 New Jersey Army National Guard MAAC Super Smash Bros. Ultimate MVP.

The third seeded Saints began their run to the grand finals with a dominating 28-2 win over Niagara University in the second matchup of the day. From there, the third seeded Saints upset No. 2 Saint Peter’s University 15-11 in the semifinals to move on to the final matchup of the night. The grand finals win was the closest of any game throughout the day. With the win, Siena was able to defend its Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF) Collegiate Invitational title from January.

Marist’s run to the championship series was a grueling one, beginning with a 20-6 win over No. 4 Manhattan College in the first round. The Red Foxes, ranked fifth, were forced to play back-to-back, taking on No. 1 Canisius College in the semifinals in the very next game. Marist took down the bracket’s top seed 16-12 to advance to the finals.
