Edison, N.J. (July 1, 2020) – With the start of the new academic year, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) officially enters its 40th year of operations, continuing its mission to provide student-athletes the opportunity to succeed in both academics and athletics.

“We are proud at the MAAC to be celebrating excellence both on and off the field for 40 years,” said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “It’s a true testament to all of the coaches, administrators, and student-athletes who have made this possible over the last four decades. Their hard work and dedication has made the MAAC what it is today; a conference that celebrates their outstanding efforts in 24 unique championships every year. I’d like to thank all of those people who have played a part in shaping the MAAC into what it is today. Despite the challenges presented in the current climate with the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of the MAAC is strongly cemented in the commonality of our member institutions and commitment to the mission of the conference.”

To celebrate 40 years, the MAAC once again partnered with Phoenix Design Works to develop a 40th Anniversary branding program. The new comprehensive branding program consists of a family of logo marks, including the primary logo mark and sport specific championship marks created to celebrate the MAAC’s 40th Anniversary across every sport for all the conference’s constituent institutions. The new branding program will be applied to all conference branding needs, including social media, championship events, promotional initiatives, communications and on line applications. All logos can be found on each sport specific championship page and the logo library on the MAAC Website.

Commissioner Ensor went on to add “It was a natural decision to turn to our friends at Phoenix to create the branding for our 40th Anniversary program. Phoenix Design Works has been the MAAC’s branding partner for 20 years, creating our core branding and all anniversary branding programs since 2000. Phoenix gave us the level of commitment we have come to depend on them for, and we are happy going forward with the new branding program.”

In addition to new branding, the MAAC will be releasing 40th Anniversary Teams throughout the summer. 40th Anniversary Teams will highlight some of the best student-athletes and coaches throughout the MAAC’s history, including both current and former member institutions. All current MAAC sponsored sports are set to be highlighted, beginning with Men’s and Women’s Basketball on July 7 and 9, respectively. Marketing will continue through the 2020-21 academic year at conference championship events.

The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield University, Fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981, with the charter members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball game and the MAAC story had begun.

The MAAC is currently comprised of 11 full time member institutions and 17 associate members, crowning champions in 24 sports. Current members include Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Monmouth University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College.
