MAAC Announces 40th Anniversary Outdoor Track and Field Team
Edison, N.J. (Aug. 20, 2020) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) celebrates its 40
th Anniversary throughout the 2020-21 academic year, continuing its mission to provide student-athletes the opportunity to succeed in both academics and athletics.
The 40
th Anniversary Tennis Team highlights some of the best student-athletes in MAAC history. Manhattan leads the conference with 14 men’s championships and 11 women’s championships, while Monmouth University has six men’s titles followed by Rider University with two. On the women’s side, Monmouth also has six women’s championships and Rider has three.
The 2021 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be hosted by Rider University and are set to return May 8 and 9 at the Michael P. Brady Track and Field Complex in Lawrence Township, New Jersey.

Cooper Roach – 2015-17
Cooper Roach closed out his career at Canisius by competing at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships in Lexington, Ky., where he took part in the 3K steeplechase event. Roach is the first Griff to compete in an NCAA Track Championship event. He finished the race with a time of 8:52.12, leaving him 5.5 seconds shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Oregon.

Kelly Thompson – 1998-01
Kelly Thompson holds the school record in the 100 meter and 200 meter events, records she has held on to for nearly 20 years. In 2000, she set the school mark in the 100-meter race with her time of 12.74, and in that same year, she set the Canisius record time for the 200 meters with a time of 26.34.

Leonard Korir – 2009-12
Leonard Korir’s ’12 stellar Iona career contained many accolades during the outdoor track & field season.
During the 2011 season, Korir finished top 10 in every event he took part in. He had three first place finishes, two of which came in postseason events. He won the 1,500-meter at the MAAC Championships, but then kicked it in the high gear at the national level. Korir qualified for both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter race at the NCAA D1 Championships. In Drake, IA, he placed third in the 5K and captured first place in the 10K.
Korir has gone on to have a stellar running career after his time in New Rochelle. He ran in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Estádio Olímpico João Havelange. The Maroon & Gold's first American Olympian was the second Team USA runner to cross the line in the 10,000-meter event.
Korir's time of 27:35.65 was his fastest in 2016 and his second fastest 10k ever following his Iona school record 27:29.40 set on May 1, 2011 at Stanford University. Korir adds another chapter to a story book 2015-16, where he enlisted in the United States Army, gained American citizenship, and then qualified and competed in the Olympic Games.
Korir was Iona's first ever NCAA Champion, accomplishing the feat twice in 2011 in the indoor 5,000-meter and outdoor 10,000-meter events and was an eight-time NCAA All-American. |

Emmily Chelanga – 2003-06
Emmily Chelanga '06 had one of the most balanced and outstanding careers of an Iona cross country and track & field student-athlete. She was inducted into the Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame in 2019.
In 2004, Chelanga captured two gold medals in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter at the MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She competed in the 5k at the 2004 NCAA Championships and earned All-American honors.
Chelanga won the MAAC Cross Country championship in 2003 and 2004. She placed inside the top 10 individually at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2006. In 2003, she placed inside the top 40 at the NCAA Cross Country championship.
Chelanga was a three-time MAAC Indoor Track & Field Champion. Chelanga won the 5,000-meter race in 2004 and 2005. She also captured gold in the 5k at the 2005 championship. |

Jake Freeman – 1999-04
Jake Freeman won a pair of NCAA championships at Manhattan, the 2003 indoor weight throw and the 2004 outdoor hammer throw. He also captured four consecutive IC4A titles in the hammer throw and was the NCAA record holder in the event. Freeman finished third in the hammer throw at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and represented the United States at the 2009 World Championships. He was named Manhattan's Athlete of the Decade in 2010. |

Aliann Pompey – 1995-99
Aliann Pompey won the Division I 400-meter dash in 2000. She also holds seven Manhattan records and won eight individual Metropolitan titles. Pompey was named All-East six times, and was selected as one of the top 25 MAAC all-time performers in 2006. She has competed in four Olympic Games, in addition to participating in the World Championships in athletics five times and the IAAF World Indoor Championships on four occasions. She was a gold medalist in the 400-meters at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and a Commonwealth Games silver medalist in the event in 2010. She currently serves as president of the Panam Sports Athlete Commission. |

Gaye enjoyed success in both indoor and outdoor track & field. Palmer has six first-place finishes in her three-year career between discus, shot put, and hammer. She also has an additional 19 top-5 finishes in those three events. She is also a two-time MAAC All-Academic. |

She recorded seven first-place finishes at MAAC Outdoor Championships throughout her career. Baptiste helped Rider to the 2013 MAAC Outdoor Championship, earning Most Outstanding Track Performer, while winning gold in both the 100m dash with a time of 10.98 and the 200m dash with a time of 21.66. He helped lead the 4x100-meter relay team to a first-place finish and the 4x400-meter relay to silver at MAACs. He also won the 200m with an IC4A qualifying time (22.15) and placed second in the 100m at the 2012 MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and finished his Rider career with gold in the 4x100-meter relay, silver in the 4x400-meter relay and bronze in the 200m. |

Isaiah Harris – 2010-14
Isaiah Harris '14 finished his four-year career as one of the most decorated Saint Peter's men's track student-athletes of all-time. He is the only Peacock in program history to earn All-American status, achieving the honors at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships after finishing 14th in the high jump and at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships after finishing 19th in the high jump. In addition to becoming the program's only All-American, Harris was also the first ever Peacock to compete in both the NCAA Indoor Championships and NCAA Outdoor Championships, qualifying for three total NCAA Championships and three NCAA Outdoor Regionals during his career. The 2014 graduate holds Saint Peter's record for the most MAAC Individual Championships medals (18) and he was named as the MAAC Most Outstanding Performer four-times --- twice at the MAAC Indoor Championships and twice at the Outdoor Championships. Moreover, Harris was a seven-time qualifier for the IC4A Championships and only Saint Peter's IC4A Champion, winning the triple jump in 2013. |

Katie Kopacz graduated as one of the most decorated distance runners in school history both on the cross country circuit and in the indoor and outdoor track seasons. She set the MAAC outdoor record in the 5,000m while she was in Jersey City. Kopacz would ultimately be voted into the SPU Athletics Hall of Fame as an inductee in 2007. |

Sheila Reid Barnhill (La Salle) – 1986
In 1986, Sheryl Barnhill qualified for the NCAA Track Championships in the 5,000-meter run, earning her the distinction of being La Salle's first NCAA track qualifier. That same year, she finished third in the 5,000 at the Penn Relays, setting a La Salle record after running a 4:58 mile leg in the distance medley relay just hours before. She graduated with school records in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. |
