MAAC Announces 40th Anniversary Rowing Team

Edison, N.J. (Aug 25, 2020) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) celebrates its 40th Anniversary throughout the 2020-21 academic year, continuing its mission to provide student-athletes the opportunity to succeed in both academics and athletics.
 
The 40th Anniversary Women’s Rowing Team highlights some of the best student-athletes in MAAC history. MAAC Rowing traces back to 1997, when Marist College captured the first MAAC Championship. Since, Marist leads the conference with 11 championships overall, followed by Jacksonville University and Loyola University, a former MAAC member, with five titles. The MAAC Rowing Championship is set to return May 16 in 2021, at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey.

Hannah Blum – 2012-16
Hannah Blum was a four-year letterwinner for the Canisius rowing program, and served as a coxswain for the Golden Griffins. She was the coxswain for the 2013 MAAC Varsity Eight Crew of the Year when the Blue and Gold placed third at the MAAC Rowing Championship.

Coach Dave Patterson
Dr. David Patterson completed his 13th season as the head coach of Fairfield women's rowing and also serves as the Director of Rowing. He earned the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2008, his first season with the Stags. He has led the women's team to success both in the MAAC and in outside competition. At Dad Vails, Patterson helped the women's rowing program earn medals in four consecutive years. In 2010, the pair won silver while the novice four secured gold. In 2011, both shells captured medals again with the novice earning third place and the pair taking home top honors. The novice 4 also garnered a medal in 2012 (silver) and in 2013 (gold). In MAAC competition, he coached the varsity 4 to the gold medal in two of the last four MAAC championships.

Erin Whalen – 1997-99
Erin Whalen '99 was a standout rowing for the Iona program just after rowing became an NCAA sport in 1997. She competed in three MAAC Championships during which the Gaels placed runner up twice which is the highest mark in program history. Whalen and Fiona Augar also led the varsity four to victory at the Metropolitan Championships twice and in 1998 produced one of the best finishes at the Head of the Charles in program history by placing 15th out of 65 crews in the Club 4.  Whalen went on to become Iona College’s first and only Rhodes Scholar and was selected to the Oxford women’s lightweight 8 and won The Boat Race over Cambridge.

Kate Sexton is one the hardest working performers for not only the women's rowing team, but also the entire school. She has helped grow the program thanks to her work ethic. An outstanding rower, she was a major factor in the program's improvement over her four seasons.
Coach Alex Canale
Alex Canale has helped raise the profile of the Manhattan Women’s Rowing Team during his three seasons at the helm of the Jaspers. Since arriving midway through 2017-18, he has overseen the development of Manhattan’s first three All-MAAC performers in Shannon Forty, Elizabeth McCabe and Ella O'Brien. Two years ago, his boats swept Iona in a dual meet en route to sweeping MAAC Weekly honors for the first time in program history. In a short period of time, Canale has made a lasting impression in Riverdale.

Hillary Saeger – 2003-07
Hillary Saeger was a part of Marist's 2006 and 2007 MAAC Championships. She has raced in three World Championships, rowing in the U.S. Lightweight Quadruple Scull boat. Following graduation, Saeger competed in the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland and won a silver medal in the 2010 World Championships in New Zealand, and a bronze medal in the 2011 World Championships in Bled, Slovenia.
Coach Tom Sanford
Tom Sanford took over as Marist's Director of Rowing in the 2001-02 season, and became the women's head coach in 2007-08. Marist has won three MAAC championships in Sanford's tenure as women's head coach, and seven conference titles since he took over as Director of Rowing. In 2013, Marist earned the MAAC's first automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament when the Red Foxes won the conference title. Marist made a return NCAA trip in 2019.

Jaclyn Smith – 2011-14
Smith was named to the Pioneer All-Rookie Team in 2012. She earned the Allyson Rioux Memorial Book Award in 2014 and has been a member of the United States National Rowing Team since 2013. Smith also earned the MAAC Honor Roll from 2012-2014. She also made the Sacred Heart University Dean’s List in May and December of 2012. Smith won the legs, trunk and arms four at the 2015 C.R.A.S.H.-B. Indoor Rowing Championships. She also finished second in the pair at the 2015 Dad Vail Regatta. She took the legs, trunk and arms mixed four with coxswain at the 2014 Head of the Charles. Internationally, she finished first in the PR3 pair at the 2019 World Rowing Championships and won gold in the PR3 pair at the 2018 World Rowing Championships, won silver in the PR3 four with coxswain at the 2017 World Rowing Championships, and won silver in the legs, trunk and arms mixed four with coxswain at the 2016 Paralympic Games. She took silver in the legs, trunk and arms mixed four with coxswain at the 2015 World Rowing Championships. She won silver in the legs, trunk and arms mixed four with coxswain at the 2014 World Rowing Championships and finished fourth in the legs, trunk and arms in the mixed four with coxswain at the 2013 World Rowing Championships.

Channing Scott 2018 – Pres.
Channing Scott was named first-team All-MAAC after leading Stetson's 1V8+ boat to a bronze medal at the 2019 MAAC Championships. The Hatters finished fourth overall that year, the program’s best finish since joining the conference in 2013.
