MAAC Announces 40th Anniversary Men’s Soccer Team

Edison, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2020) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) celebrates its 40th Anniversary throughout the 2020-21 academic year, continuing its mission to provide student-athletes the opportunity to succeed in both academics and athletics.
 
The 40th Anniversary Men’s Soccer Team highlights some of the best student-athletes in MAAC history. MAAC Men’s Soccer traces back to 1988, where Former MAAC members Army West Point and La Salle University competed in the first MAAC Championship. Since, Loyola University, another former MAAC member, leads the conference with 12 championship titles, followed by Fairfield University with five and Marist College with four.

Alan McGreal – 2006-09
A four-year letter winner, Alan McGreal is Canisius' career leader in goals (35), assists (29) and points (99), which he racked up during his playing career from 2006-09… A four-time All-MAAC honoree and the 2006 MAAC Rookie of the Year, he is one of three players in school history to be named to the All-MAAC First Team on multiple occasions.

Michael O'Keeffe – 2009-12
Michael O'Keeffe finished his career with a 1.13 goals against average over his four years with 302 saves and nine shutouts in 70 games. He earned the 2011 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year after posting five shutouts, making 65 saves, and posting a 1.17 goals against average in 18 matches. He earned four All-MAAC berths during his career and collected two All-Region awards.
Coach Carl Rees
Carl Rees has coached more than 200 games in the MAAC over his 24 seasons with the Stags soccer program. He has posted 136 wins in MAAC play and holds a .673 winning percentage against conference foes. His overall win total stands at 227 victories (.585 winning percentage). Rees has captured five regular-season titles and five tournament championships, advancing to five NCAA tournaments. Rees became the first Fairfield coach to win an NCAA tournament game with the team's win over UConn in the 2006 tournament. He led Fairfield to 16 winning seasons and several national rankings during his career.

Thomas P. McElderry – 1981-84
McElderry is Iona’s all-time leading scorer, tallying 91 points on 38 goals and 15 assists during his time donning the Maroon & Gold. His 38 career goals still stand as a program record, as well as third most in MAAC history. McElderry’s 53 points in 1984 are the most in a single-season in both Iona and the league’s history, helping him earn his second MAAC Player of the Year honor. His 20 goals during his record-setting campaign in 1984 were tied for a MAAC record until 1990 and still remains the mark to beat in Iona history. In 2015, McElderry became the first men’s soccer alumnus to be inducted into the Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame.

Marcellin Gohier – 2017-19
Marcellin Gohier is arguably the best goalie in program history, and one of the best in MAAC annals. He was named the 2017 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year after going 8-5-1 with six shutouts and a 0.62 GAA as a sophomore. Gohier followed that up by going 10-5 with seven clean sheets as a junior in 2018. He capped his outstanding career with five wins, including four via shutout, as a senior in 2019. For his outstanding career, Gohier registered 23 wins and a program-record 17 shutouts.

Keith Detelj – 2003-06
Keith Detelj is perhaps the finest two-sport athlete in Marist history. In soccer, he holds the program's records for goals and points since it went Division I in 1981. Detelj was a two-time MAAC Tournament Most Valuable Player who led the Red Foxes to their first two NCAA Tournament appearances in program 2004 and 2005. In those two seasons, Detelj was also named First Team All-MAAC. He earned All-MAAC honors all four years of his career, as he was named Second Team All-MAAC and to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2003, and was a Second Team All-MAAC selection in 2006. At the 2007 Marist Athletics Department Senior Awards Banquet, Detelj shared Male Sportsperson of the Year honors with men's basketball standout Jared Jordan, who led the nation in assists as a junior and senior. Detelj was also a lacrosse standout who was named MAAC Tournament MVP when Marist made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005.
Coach Bobby Herodes
Herodes led the Marist men's soccer program for its first 10 years in the MAAC (1997-2006), and led the Red Foxes to three conference championships in a six-year span (2000, 2004, 2005). He was named MAAC Coach of the Year in 2002, when the Red Foxes advanced to the conference final, giving the program four berths in the MAAC championship game between 2000-05.

Eric Klenofsky – 2013-16
Eric Klenofsky's career accolades include two-time All-Region, two-time MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, 2015 All-MAAC First Team, three-time All-MAAC Second Team, and 2013 MAAC All-Rookie Team. He ranks third in program history for goals against average and save percentage. Klenofsky was drafted by D.C United of the MLS in 2017.

Brett Petricek – 2011-12
Petricek’s time at Niagara helped make the Purple Eagles a force in the MAAC, as he backstopped the squad to its first-ever conference championship in 2012. Petricek holds the program records for goals-against average (0.81) and shutouts (15) despite being part of the team for only two years. Petricek also ranks second in program history in wins (22).

Borja Angoitia – 2011-14
Angoitia, the 2013 and 2014 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, holds the Quinnipiac program record for career wins (32) and shutouts (25). He helped lead the Bobcats to a league championship/NCAA Tournament appearance in the program’s first season in the MAAC in 2013. Angoitia finished his Quinnipiac career with an impressive 1.01 goals-against mark.

Craig Wicken – 1997-98
Wicken ushered Rider into the MAAC with consecutive MAAC Player of the Year honors en route to consecutive MAAC Championships in 1997 and 1998. He earned MAAC Championship MVP honors in 1998. He is the Broncs’ all-time career scoring leader with 49 goals and 122 points. Wicken led the Broncs to a national ranking of No. 15.
Coach Charlie Inverso
A name synonymous with winning soccer in Mercer County, Charlie Inverso was named the new head coach of the Rider University men’s soccer team in January of 2011.  In 2015 he was named the NSCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year and Inverso led the Broncs to three NCAA Tournament appearances in four years (2015, 2016, 2018). Inverso's Broncs made it to four-straight MAAC Championship Games (2015-18). Following a 44-year drought, players on Inverso's rosters earned All-America honors in back to back years (Christian Flath - 2016, Jose Aguinaga - 2017).

Juan Gaviria, the 2006 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and a 2013 inductee into the Saint Peter's Athletics Hall of Fame, graduated as arguably the most potent offensive force in program history and still has his name littered throughout both the program's and the MAAC's record books. His 105 career points (44g, 17a) and 44 career goals both lead the MAAC all-time; he was also one of the most clutch players in school history with a program-leading 16 game-winning goals. He helped the team reach back-to-back MAAC Championship games during his tenure.

The 2012 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, Ek also earned First Team All-Region & All-MAAC honors that season, Second Team honors in 2010 & 2011, and was a member of the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2009. Ek is the program's all-time leader in game-winning goals (8) and is tied for third in career goals (22) and fifth in points (54).

Montag’s 37 career goals and 23 assists were La Salle records at the time of his graduation. He was named NSCAA/Met Life Second Team All-American as well as a member of the All-MAAC Tournament team in 1990 and the All-MAAC team in 1990 and 1991. He’s second in program history with 97 career points.

Zach Thornton (Loyola) – 1993-94
Thornton was an NSCAA All-American in each of his two seasons in goal at Loyola, including first team accolades in 1993. He would go on to play 16 seasons in the MLS, where he was recognized as MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 1998 and 2009, and he also earned eight caps for the U.S. National Team.
Coach Bill Sento (Loyola)
Coach Bill Sento coached at Loyola from 1980 to 1999. In that span, Sento won eight-straight MAAC Championships from 1989-96, cementing his place as one of the greatest soccer coaches in MAAC history.
