MAAC SAAC Voter Registration Initiative Hits Major Checkpoint
EDISON, N.J. (Sept. 29, 2020) – Over 100 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) teams have become fully registered to vote for the upcoming United States presidential election. The push for the entire conference to become fully registered to vote stems from the recently announced Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
Voter Registration Initiative.
Election Day 2020 is set for Thursday, Nov. 3, less than 40 days away. This past week, Siena College became the first MAAC institution to have 100% of its eligible student-athletes registered to vote. The accomplishment marks a major milestone in the Voter Registration Initiative as more teams around the conference become fully registered and other institutions approach 100% registration status.
“Hearing that 100% of Siena student-athletes became registered to vote was great news to me, and a major checkpoint in the SAAC Voter Registration Initiative,” said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “I’d like to congratulate the Saints on their dedication in this process and I challenge the rest of the conference to become 100% registered as soon as possible. The election is quickly approaching, it is great to see all of the effort being put forward by our institutions.”
The goal of the Voter Registration Initiative is to ensure all student-athletes have the ability and means to exercise their right to vote come Election Day. The three main focuses of the campaign are:
- Ensuring all student-athletes are registered to vote.
- Obtaining absentee ballots for those who need them.
- Allowing access to all those who wish to vote in person.

“Jamie [Smith] and I are inspired by the support we have received from MAAC officials, member institutions, student-athletes and community members throughout the MAAC SAAC Voter Registration Initiative,” said MAAC SAAC Chair Turner Dirrigl of Canisius College. “There has been great progress made at each of our institutions, including Siena, whose student-athlete population is fully registered. We want to thank everyone for their support and encourage our SAAC representatives to continue to promote civic engagement in their communities.”
SAAC Vice Chair Jamie Smith of Iona College added “We are very excited to see so many MAAC student-athletes making the decision to register to vote and we are hopeful that our initiative will encourage everyone to exercise their right and to promote positive change in our country.”
