Marist Closes Out Opening Week with Win in Sunday’s Women’s MAAC Hoops Action

The Marist women's basketball team defeated Vermont, 67-50, at McCann Arena on Sunday afternoon. This marked the first time Marist head coach Brian Giorgis coached against Vermont head coach Alisa Kresge, who played for Giorgis from 2003-07 and was an assistant coach for him from 2009-16. Marist sophomore Kiara Fisher scored a game-high 17 points and Zaria Shazer added 13 points and 13 rebounds, notching her third double-double in as many games this season.

The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team held Big Ten Rutgers to just 48 points while forcing 18 turnovers, but the Stags would come up short with a 48-42 loss on the road. Fairfield trailed by just one in the final minute, before the Scarlet Knights extended their lead with a 7-0 run. Callie Cavanaugh led the Stags for the second straight game with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting. In her last six games, Cavanaugh is averaging 13.5 points while shooting 50 percent (34-for-68) from the field.

Michigan State (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) led wire-to-wire to defeat Niagara (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) 89-65 Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action from the Breslin Center in East Lansing, MI. Maddy Yelle led Niagara with 12 points, followed by Ally Haar with 11 points and team-best eight rebounds. Aaliyah Parker added 10 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks off the bench for the Purple Eagles.
