MAAC Announces 2020-21 Women’s Basketball Major Award Winners
Atlantic City, N.J. (March 10, 2021) –The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced its 2020-21 Women’s Basketball Major Awards, as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.
Quinnipiac University’s Mackenzie DeWees was named the 2020-21 MAAC Women’s Player of the Year. DeWees concluded a incredible regular season ranked inside the top eight in the MAAC in points (6th), rebounds (6th), field goal percentage (1st), steals (4th), and assist/turnover ratio (7th). DeWess tallied career-high totals in points, steals, rebounds, and field goals. She helped lead the Bobcats to the number 2 seed in the 2021 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship
Mikala Morris of Quinnipiac was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. Morris followed her 2019-20 All-Rookie season with a breakout year as a sophomore. The league's rebounding leader also finished fifth in scoring, second in blocked shots, 10th in steals, and first in both offensive and defensive rebounds per game. A three-time MAAC Player of the Week, Morris also found herself inside the top-35 nationally in blocked shots (27th), blocks per game (31st), rebounds (32nd), and rebounds per game (26th).
The 2020-21 MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year are Makayla Firebaugh of Rider University and Caitlin Weimar of Marist College. Firebaugh is the Broncs' leading scorer this season at 11.2 points per game, and has scored in double figures a team-high 15 times in 22 games played. She's added 4.4 rebounds per game and shot a team-high 88.9 percent from the free-throw line,
Weimar started all 17 games she played in, averaging 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds, the latter ranking second on the team. She was third in the MAAC with a .488 field goal percentage and 3.18 offensive rebounds per game, both tops on the Red Foxes. She blocked 28 shots, which was fifth in the MAAC. Weimar contributed to the Red Foxes winning the MAAC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in 2021 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship.
Andrea Hernangomez of Fairfield University was named the 2020-21 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year. Hernangomez average 6.1 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game while averaging 20.5 minutes per game. Hernangomez helped the Stags claim the No. 4 seed in the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championships.
