MAAC Announces Weekly Award Winners

Atlantic City, N.J. (Mar. 12, 2021) – Today, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced various weekly award honors across many different sports including; Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Volleyball and Water Polo.
 
Golf Weekly Award Winner presented by Levy Recognition
Award reflects all matches up until Wednesday, March 10th
 
Men’s Golfer of the Week
 Austin Devereux, Rider
Sr., Brielle, NJ /Manasquan
Devereux was downright dominant in earning medalist honors and leading the Broncs to victory at the MAAC Spring Kickoff, March 6-7 at Shore Gate GC in Ocean View, NJ. In cold, windy conditions, Devereux posted a career-best six-under 66 in the opening round and shot four-under 68 in the second. No other player carded a single round under 71. He finished the tournament 10-under par, with the closest competitor at one-under.
 
Women’s Golfer of the Week
Liddie McCook, Monmouth
So., Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East
Liddie McCook took first place in a seven-team field at Monmouth first Spring Series event Monday at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood, NJ. She made par on her final eight holes after opening the round with a birdie to hold off a pair of Big East competitors from St. John's to place one stroke ahead of them and win her second career tournament.

Defensive Player of the Week
 Brett Dobson, St. Bonaventure
Fr., Oshawa, Ontario, The Hill Academy
 Dobson led Bonnies to first Division I win, 13-6 at Quinnipiac, with 14 saves Stopped 14 of 19 shots faced for a 70% save percentage, adding 5 groundballs. Brett was named to USILA Division I Dynamic Team of the Week for his performance. Allowed only 2 second half goals and none in the 4th quarter to preserve victory
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Vito Musso, Marist
Sr., Roslyn, NY/St. Anthony’s
Musso had a stellar performance in the season opener, scoring five goals and leading the Red Foxes to a victory over the Detroit Mercy Titans. The senior scored five goals, which were game high. The game was tied at 9 heading into the fourth quarter, but that's when Musso exploded, scoring 4 of his five goals and helping guide Marist to the victory
 
Rookie of the Week
Logan Covey, Marist
Fr., Finksburg, MD/Westminster Senior High
Covey dominated in net for the Red Foxes in his first career start as a freshman. Covey made a career-high 14 saves in Marist's season opening victory over Detroit Mercy, and had a .560 save percentage. Covey allowed only 11 goals, and just two in the fourth quarter helping the REd Foxes secure the victory. He also added two ground balls in the game.

Men’s Player of the Week
Sergio Martinez, Monmouth
Sr., Veracruz, Mexico/ Bachillerato IEDEP
Senior Sergio Martinez went 2-0 at No. 5 singles, and went 1-1 at No. 1 doubles this weekend. Martinez defeated Delaware in singles play 6-4, 6-7, 10-3, then won 6-4, 6-3 against Bucknell. He teamed up with Max Benaim to win 6-4 over Delaware in doubles.
 
Women’s Player of the Week
Ann Spurka, Monmouth
So., Cumming, GA/Cambridge
Sophomore Ann Spurka went 1-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-0 at No. 1 doubles. In Monmouth's win over La Salle, Spurka defeated her opponent in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Teaming up with Nicole Gasser, she earned a convincing 6-0 win in doubles.

Player of the Week
Manuela Nicolini, Fairfield
Gs., Castelnuovo Rangone, Italy / Istituto d'Arte A. Venturi
Nicolini posted a double-double in both ends of the Stags' sweep of Quinnipiac last Sunday. The graduate student averaged 9.00 assists and 2.67 digs per set, and also scored 2.44 points per frame - hitting .867 (13-of-15) from the setter spot with six service aces and a hand in six Fairfield blocks
 
Libero of the Week
Georgia Via, Fairfield
Fr., McKinney, TX/ Frisco Independence
Georgia Via averaged 3.89 digs per set (35 digs in 9 sets) in the Stags' MAAC sweep of Quinnipiac. The rookie also handed out six assists, landed three service aces and dropped in a kill from the libero spot.
 
Rookie of the Week
Jordan Newblatt, Marist
Fr., Clarkston, MI/Clarkston
Newblatt had a massive debut for the Red Foxes on Sunday, putting up monster numbers in both games. As the focal point of the Red Fox offense in game one, Newblatt secured her first career double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs. In the second match, she fell just short of another double-double by two kills, with totals of 8 kills and 12 digs, which capped a monster week for the freshman outside hitter.

Offensive Player of the Week
Amanda Rice, Villanova
Jr., San Jose, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty
Led the Wildcats in points through the first three matches with 15 (seven goals, eight assists). Tallied three goals and three assists in a win over Saint Francis, then repeated those totals one day later in a 21-4 victory over Mount St. Mary's.
 
Rookie of the Week
Stella Byles, Villanova
Fr., Portland, Ore./Newberg
Scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of play in her collegiate debut against Saint Francis. Tallied the goal with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Finished the match with two goals, two steals and one field block. Over three matches during the opening weekend of play had four goals, three assists, seven points and three steals. Also won 5-of-6 sprints.

Offensive Player of the Week
Mary Soures, Siena
 Jr., Rochester, NY / Webster Thomas
Soures went off for nine points with eight goals an an assist in a weekend sweep of Canisius. Soures scored seven goals and an assist in Sunday's showdown in a big win for Siena.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Ally Mervine - Siena
Sr., Pasadena, MD/ Archbishop Spalding
Mervine was solid in a 2-0 week for the Saints, as she converted a 6.19 GAA on 44 shots faced over two games. She would make 20 total saves, 12 of which came in an OT thriller on Saturday.
 
Rookie of the Week
Riley Davis, Canisius
Fr., Painted Post, N.Y./ Corning-Painted Post
Freshman midfielder Riley Davis scored the first three collegiate goals of her career Saturday, as the Golden Griffins traveled to face MAAC foe Siena for a two-game series. Davis, a native of Painted Post, N.Y., finished the contest with three goals, including the game-tying goal with two seconds left to send the game to overtime. In the second matchup, Davis would net a goal and dish out an assist, to finish her opening weekend with four goals and one assist.
