Marist Wins the 2021 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship

Atlantic City, N.J. (March 13, 2021) – No. 1 Marist defeated No. 3 Saint Peter’s 69-29 in the 2021 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship Game. The win marks the 11th MAAC title for Marist and their first since 2014. The Red Foxes will represent the MAAC in the NCAA Tournament as the automatic qualifier.

Key Moments:
  • With a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, Marist’s Willow Duffell is your Tropicana Play of the Game.
  • Marist started the game with a 12-0 run and led the Peacocks 20-5 after the first quarter.
  • Marist shot .491 (28-for-57) from the field, while holding Saint Peter's to .208 (11-for-53).
  • The Peacocks were able to outscore the Red foxes 14-12 in the second quarter of the championship game, but were held to single digits in the other three frames.
  • Marist applied constant pressure from both ends of the floor, shooting 49 percent from the field as a team while also tallying seven blocks and 10 steals.
Notables:
  • Duffell was named Most Valuable Player. She averaged 17.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in Marist's three victories.
  • Caitlin Weimar and Allie Best were named to the All-Championship Team. Weimar averaged 10.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocked shots in her two games. Best, the NCAA leader in assist-to-turnover ratio, had 19 assists against just three turnovers in three games.
  • Taiah Thornton and Ajia James were selected to the All-Championship team.
  • Sky Castro finished the tournament leading Saint Peter's in rebounding during each of their three games, tallying a team-leading seven boards against the Red Foxes on Saturday.

The NCAA Women's Basketball Selection Show will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. The first round of the NCAA Tournament will take place on Sunday, March 21 and Monday, March 22.
