MAAC Statement on Attendance for 2020-21 Fall and Spring Sports
EDISON, N.J. (Mar. 5, 2021) – Today the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced that member schools will not sell tickets to the public for campus-based competitions for the remainder of the academic year including fall into spring and spring sports. It was decided that the MAAC member schools can choose to allow a limited number of student-athlete family members to attend home games only. Specifically, the policy that was passed unanimously by the MAAC Council of Presidents states:
To allow two family members per student-athlete for the home team to attend all MAAC competition, subject to state, local, and institutional regulations exercised at the institution’s discretion. The MAAC supports the right of individual member institutions to make this policy more restrictive, based on their campus COVID policies, local and state health guidelines, and the capacity and configuration of their athletic facilities. The new policy is effective March 6.
“I’m pleased that the MAAC student-athletes may be able to have some immediate family members present for home contests,” notes MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “I know it will not satisfy everyone, and I can only hope that a return to normalcy will continue to develop for intercollegiate sports as the year progresses.”
As COVID-19 has created challenges for intercollegiate athletics, the MAAC and its member schools have implemented COVID-19 risk mitigation strategies, including appropriate testing. In addition to testing, the institution affirms its student-athletes, coaches, staff, and others involved with intercollegiate athletics at the institution are observing risk mitigation activities such as daily self-health checks, frequent washing of hands, wearing masks, social distancing, three times a week testing, and other protocols as recommended by the CDC, state, and local health authorities.
