Siena and Monmouth Named 2020-21 MAAC Men’s Basketball Regular Season Co-Champions
EDISON, N.J. (Mar. 6, 2021)– Siena College and Monmouth University both claimed a share of the 2020-21 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s Basketball Regular Season Championship. The title marks the Saints’ ninth in program history and second straight, while Monmouth earns their third MAAC regular season championship in program history.
Siena (12-4, 12-4 MAAC) will enter the 2021 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship as the top seed, Monmouth (12-7, 12-6 MAAC) will enter as the No. 2 seed. Siena swept Monmouth in their regular season series (Jan. 3 & 4) giving the Saints the No. 1 overall seed.
In his second season as head coach, Carmen Maciariello, a former Siena Basketball alumnus, led the Saints to the regular season title for the second straight year. Monmouth head coach King Rice claims his third regular season title for the Hawks.
Siena is led by a pair of upperclassmen in Jalen Pickett and Manny Camper. Pickett, the unanimous 2020-21 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, has averaged 12.8 PPG and 6.2 APG on the season. Camper has had a big senior season, averaging 14.6 PPG and 10 RPG.
Leading the league in scoring, Monmouth is led by a trio of seniors in Deion Hammond, George Papas, and Melik Martin. Hammond finished up the year second in the MAAC in scoring, averaging 17.2 PPG, while Papas (12.6 PPG) and Martin (12.5 PPG) finished 10
th and 11
th, respectively.
The Saints have earned an opening round bye and will face the winner of the No. 8 / No. 9 matchup on Wednesday, March 10 at 5:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals on ESPN+. The Hawks have also received an opening round bye and will take on the winner of the No.7 / No.10 matchup on Wednesday March 10 at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
