Marist College Captures 2021 MAAC Women’s Rowing Championship

PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, NJ – Marist College took home the gold in all three grand final races as the Red Foxes captured their second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Rowing Championship on Sunday. Marist finished the day with a perfect 54 points with their victories in the Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Eight to take home the program’s 12th conference title.
 
In the Varsity Four Grand Final, Marist hung on for the victory in the final 500 meters, clocking in at 7:58.042. Jacksonville University placed second with a time of 8:00.146, with Fairfield University finishing in third (8:30.970).
 
In the Second Varsity Eight Grand Final, the Red Foxes earned their second gold medal of the afternoon (6:58.534) by defeating second-place Jacksonville (07:03.556) and third-place Stetson University (7:11.934).
 
The closest finish of the championship came in the final race of the day, the Varsity Eight Grand Final. Marist would use a late rally to pass Stetson, complete the sweep, and clinch the MAAC Championship with a winning time of 6:41.274. Stetson University would finish just 0.016 seconds behind at 6:41.290. Jacksonville would round out the top three with a time of 6:47.848.
 
Right behind Marist in the final championship standings was Jacksonville with 45 points. Stetson would finish in third place with 43 points, followed by Fairfield in fourth place with 28 points. Drake University ended the day in fifth place with 27 points. Sacred Heart University, who qualified for all three grand final races, came in sixth place with 24 points. Canisius College placed seventh with 21 points, including a fourth-place finish in the Varsity Eight Grand Final. Rounding out the leaderboard was Manhattan College in eighth place with 18 points and Robert Morris University with 10 points.
 
Following the conclusion of the championship, the MAAC announced that Marist’s Tom Sanford was named the 2021 MAAC Women’s Rowing Coach of the Year, winning it for the second season in a row.
