Fairfield's Bill Currier Named ABCA/ATEC Northeast Regional Coach of the Year
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After leading the Fairfield University Baseball team to their most historic season in school history which featured a program record 39 wins and a spot in the NCAA Regional Finals, Head Coach
Bill Currier received an important honor as he was named the ABCA/ATEC Northeast Regional Coach of the Year. Currier becomes the first Stag baseball coach to receive this accolade from the region.
"I am thrilled for our coaching staff, players and administrators who supported this historic and successful season," Currier said. "The consistent, show up ready to play effort each game by our players was so much fun to experience for our coaching staff. Thanks to all the coaches in the region who supported this vote and respected the year and success of our program this spring."
Currier helped the Stags to success right from the beginning of the 2021 season as the Stags won a conference record 28-straight games to begin the season becoming the nation's last unbeaten team. Fairfield would end up tallying a 33-1 regular season mark, the highest regular season winning percentage in NCAA Division I history. Due to that remarkable success, the Stags earned an At-Large bid into the NCAA Regionals, becoming the first ever MAAC baseball team to receive an At-Large bid.
The Stags continued that success in the NCAA Regionals as they advanced to the Austin Regional finals after eliminating Southern University and Arizona State. Fairfield became just the second MAAC team to reach the Regional Finals.
A big part to Fairfield's success was their pitching as they end the 2021 season second in the nation in ERA (3.14) while leading the NCAA in WHIP (1.09). The Stags had a program record 10 All-MAAC players, with two starting pitchers receiving All-MAAC First Team accolades.
The Stags finished the season with a program record 39 victories and the highest winning percentage in Division I (.886).
