DeWees Named to Becky Hammon Award Preseason Watch List

HOPEWELL, N.J - Quinnipiac women's basketball graduate student guard Mackenzie DeWees, has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats. The 25-member watch list was unveiled on Wednesday morning.

The Becky Hammon Award was first awarded in 2020, with South Dakota's Ciara Duffy being named the inaugural winner. FGCU's Kierstan Bell won the award in 2021 and 2022. This year's preseason watch list includes representatives from 25 schools and 13 conferences. DeWees was the only representative from the MAAC.

A two-time All-MAAC First Team selection, last season DeWees became the sixth player in program-history to earn all-conference First Team honors twice in their respective careers. The rising graduate student returns for a fifth campaign after concluding last season ranked inside the top-10 in the MAAC in points (8th), rebounds (5th), field goal percentage (9th), steals (2nd), assists (7th) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3rd).

A native of Westminster, Md., DeWees tallied career-high averages in points (13.8), steals (3.3) and free-throw percentage (70.9). Last season DeWees tallied 106 steals and averaged 3.31 steals per game, which ranked fourth and fifth in the nation, respectively.

Last season, DeWees was one of only two players in the country to average at least 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds. 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals.

To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." In January, 15 players will be named to the midseason watch list. The 10 semifinalists will be announced in February, with five finalists being announced in early March. The winner will be announced in late March.
