Manhattan and Niagara Advance to Semifinal Round of 2022 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (Mar. 10, 2022) – The second day of the 2022 Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Basketball Championship quarterfinal round concluded on Thursday afternoon with No. 3 Manhattan and No. 4 Niagara winning and advancing to the semifinals.

Third seeded Manhattan ended No. 11 Canisius’ Cinderella hopes, claiming a 61-49 victory on Thursday afternoon. The Jaspers led for all but 19 seconds in the convincing win. Powered by a plus 14 rebounding margin, Manhattan converted 20 offensive rebounds into a 25-9 second chance scoring advantage. Manhattan had four players in double figures, led by Dee Dee Davis’ 18 points. Brazil Harvey-Carr followed with 11 points and the duo of Petra Juric and Courtney Warley each posted 10 points. The Canisius trio of Erika Joseph (15), Athina Lexa (14), and Dani Haskell (11) combined to score 40 of the team’s 49 points. The Jaspers reach the semifinals for the first time in over a decade, last making the league’s final four in 2011. Manhattan will face No. 2 Quinnipiac on Friday at 1:30pm in the semifinal round.

The final game of the afternoon did not disappoint, with No. 4 Niagara and No. 5 Siena’s game going right down to the wire. With 35 seconds remaining in the contest, Niagara’s Ally Haar connected on a floater in the paint, scoring the go-ahead and eventual game-winner, giving the Purple Eagles a 60-59 victory. The teams were neck and neck throughout the day, logging 13 lead changes and three ties, while no team ever led by more than eight points in the game. Sisters Angel and Aaliyah Parker were the Purple Eagle’s leading scorers, recording 16 and 13 points, respectively. The Saints top scorers were Selena Philoxy with 19 points, Rayshel Brown with 15 points, and Valencia Fontenelle-Posson with 12 points. This will be Niagara’s first trip to the MAAC semifinals since 2013. The Purple Eagles will play No. 1 Fairfield on Friday, March 11 at 11am in the semifinals.
