First Pitch of 2022 MAAC Baseball Championships Set for Tomorrow

POMONA, NY (May 24, 2022) – The 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Baseball Championships are set to begin at 11 am tomorrow morning at Clover Stadium in Pomona, NY. All games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

First-seeded Fairfield University finished the season 31-19 overall and 18-5 in MAAC play to earn a first-round bye in this year’s tournament. The Stags are led by an experienced team who helped them reach the 2021 Austin Regional Final just a year ago after securing the MAAC’s first ever at-large bid. Fairfield earned six All-MAAC selections this season including junior third basemen Charlie Pagliarini who earned First Team honors after leading the team with 12 home runs. Fairfield will take on the lower seeded winner of game one or two at 11 am on Thursday morning.

Second-seeded Marist College also earned a first-round bye in this year’s championship after going 29-15 during the regular season and 17-5 in MAAC play. The Red Foxes are led by 2022 MAAC Baseball Coach of the Year Chris Tracz who helped guide eight All-MAAC selections this year and led Marist to a conference best .298 average and a .397 on-base percentage as a team. Marist will await the higher seeded winner of game one or two at 3 pm on Thursday afternoon.

In the first game of the 2022 MAAC Baseball Championships, third-seeded Canisius College (25-23, 15-9 MAAC) will take on sixth-seeded Niagara University (19-30, 13-11 MAAC) on Wednesday at 11 am. The Purple Eagles took their season series this year, winning three out of the four games they played each other in, which includes two out of three in their conference series. Niagara outscored Canisius 27-16 throughout the four games. In their most recent contest, Canisius outlasted Niagara in 14 innings, 8-7 which was capped by a Dylan Vincent walk-off single through the right side to score Mike Steffan for the Griffs’ win.

In game two of this year’s championships, fourth-seeded Monmouth University (24-25, 12-10 MAAC) will take on defending champion and fifth-seeded Rider University (25-24, 12-10 MAAC) on Wednesday at 3 pm. Monmouth features a deep pitching staff that includes 2021 MAAC Pitcher of the Year Rob Hensey and unanimous 2022 MAAC Pitcher of the Year Trey Dombroski who led all qualified pitchers in the MAAC with a 2.63 ERA and 110 strikeouts. Rider is led by a combination of sluggers: Socrates Bardatsos, Luke Lesch, and Brendan O’Donnell who combined to hit 31 of the Broncs’ 46 home runs.
