Canisius Baseball Falls in Opening Game of 2022 NCAA Regionals

No. 6 Miami – 11 | Canisius – 6
2022 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship – Coral Gables Regional

ALEX RODRIGUEZ PARK AT MARK LIGHT FIELD | CORAL GABLES, FL
Box Score

The first pitch of the Coral Gables Regional matchup between Canisius and Miami was delayed by just under 30 hours, but Canisius did not wait any longer to get the offense going.

To leadoff the game, Mike DeStefano worked a 10-pitch at-bat before dropping a base hit into centerfield. Max Grant followed DeStefano with a base hit into right field before Mike Steffan doubled down the right field line to bring home DeStefano for the game’s first run. Vinny Chiarenza brought home Grant on an RBI fielder’s choice to put Canisius up 2-0.

Miami countered in the bottom half with a solo shot off the bat of Yohandy Morales, but Matt Duffy nabbed the next Miami batter via the strikeout to limit Miami’s damage and keep the Griffs up, 2-1.

In the top of the second, Trevor Henneman drove a one-out solo home run off the scoreboard in left field to put Canisius up, 3-1. DeStefano singled to right center after Henneman’s blast, Grant walked and Steffan delivered another RBI, this time via a single to right field to give the Griffs their fourth run of the game and the 4-1 lead.

Canisius threatened in the top of the third by loading the bases, but Miami’s Ronaldo Gallo escaped the jam unscathed.

Miami then tied the score 4-4 in the bottom of the third, driving two home runs to dead center field off the bat of Morales, his second of the game and a solo shot from Jacob Burke.

Canisius and Miami traded zeros until the bottom of the seventh, when Morales hit his third home run of the game followed by two more runs to take an 8-4 lead.

The Griffs answered in the top half of the eighth by way of Mike DeStefano’s third single of the game to plate Krzeminski. Miami closer Andrew Walters then came on to strand the bases and escape the jam.

Miami tacked on three more insurance runs in the eighth to extend their lead.

Carlin Dick singled home Dylan Vincent in the top of the ninth, but Miami’s lead would be too much for the Griffs to overcome.

Canisius will now play the loser of the matchup between Arizona and Ole Miss tomorrow morning at 11:06 am in an elimination game.
