Fairfield, Iona, Rider, Saint Peter’s and Siena Earn Wins in MAAC Men’s Basketball Action on Friday

EDISON, NJ (Jan. 21, 2023) – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball league action resumed on Friday night with five games on the docket. Fairfield University, Rider University and Siena College each protected its home court with wins, while Iona University and Saint Peter’s University both escaped with road victories in its respective games.
 
Fairfield (8-10, 4-4 MAAC) – 67 | Canisius (5-13, 3-6 MAAC) – 58

Fairfield surged past visiting Canisius in MAAC men’s basketball, 67-58, in front of a crowd of 3,219 at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Friday evening. The Stags’ second consecutive win evens their MAAC record to 4-4 while the Golden Griffins fall to 3-6 in the conference. Canisius led for the majority of the opening half, holding its highest advantage at 27-20 with 4:26 in the half. Fairfield eventually took a one-point lead at the break, before outscoring the Griffs 35-27 in the second half to win the contest 67-58. Jake Wojcik netted a season-high for the third straight game with 18 points and Supreme Cook recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead four Stags in double figures. Allan Jeanne-Rose poured in 15 points and Caleb Field scored 10 as the fourth Stag in double figures. Canisius was led by Jordan Henderson who scored a team-high 13 points and Tahj Staveskie and Jamir Moultrie scored 10 points each.

Iona withstood a second half comeback attempt by Manhattan in an 84-76 overtime win on the road in MAAC play in front of a sold out Draddy Gymnasium crowd on Friday night. Iona led by as many as 15 points in the second half, before Manhattan battled back to tie the rivalry meeting at 63-63. Over the final moments, the Gaels would take the lead twice, with the Jaspers matching them on both occasions to force overtime. In the extra period, Iona used a 13-2 run to eventually secure a 16-8 overtime advantage and win the road contest. All five starters scored in double-figures for the Gaels led by 21 points from Walter Clayton Jr. Berrick JeanLouis posted 18 points, and stuffed the stat sheet with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks, while Nelly Junior Joseph recorded his seventh straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Daniss Jenkins added 14 points and Osborn Shema had 10 points. The Jaspers also had five players in double figures led by a team-high 18 points from Samir Stewart. Nick Brennen followed with 12 points, while James Jewell, Marques Watson, and Ant Nelson each scored 10 points. The Gaels improve to 6-2 in the MAAC remaining in second place, while the Jaspers fall to an even 4-4 in conference play.

Rider erased a double-digit second-half deficit to defeat Niagara, 65-62, on Friday night at home in Alumni Gymnasium. It was the second straight game that the Broncs won after trailing at halftime and by more than 10 points in the second half, moving to 5-3 in the league. The Purple Eagles have now surrendered four in a row and slip to 4-5 in the MAAC after a 4-1 start to the league season. Down by five at halftime and then by 11 in the early stages of the second half, Rider bounced back with a 14-1 run, to take a two-point lead at the midway point of the half. The contest never exceeded more than a one-possession lead for both sides the remainder of the night, with Rider scoring the final six points following a three-point deficit to secure the 65-62 comeback win. Last game’s hero, Dwight Murray, Jr. led Rider with 19 points, five assists and three steals, while Mervin James scored 18 points and Allen Powell accounted for 10 points. Three Purple Eagles finished with double-digit points, including Aaron Gray who had a team-best 18 points, Noah Thomasson added 17 points and Sam Iorio contributed 15 points.

Saint Peter's edged Marist, 61-57, on the road in a MAAC men’s basketball game at McCann Arena on Friday night. The Peacocks snapped a five-game losing streak with the win, improving to 3-7 in the conference and the defeat for the Red Foxes ended their three-game winning streak, falling to 3-5 in the MAAC. The game was evenly played throughout, producing nine lead changes and nine ties, with Marist leading for 19:17 and Saint Peter’s leading for 16:15. After a tied halftime, the Peacocks scored the first five points in the second to take their largest lead of the night at five, but the Red Foxes responded with a 10-0 run to regain the lead and eventually take their largest lead of eight points. After Saint Peter’s tied the game at 47 all, neither team led by more than three over the next five minutes, before the Peacocks capped off the win with a jumper and two free throws with three seconds left. A trio of Peacocks scored in double figures led by game-highs of 16 points by both Isiah Dasher and Mouhamed Sow, while Jaylen Murray added 11 points. The Red Foxes also had three in double digits with Noah Harris and Patrick Gardner both scoring 15 points while Javon Cooley added 12 in the setback.

Siena used a dominate second half to secure a 72-57 victory over Mount St. Mary's in MAAC action at MVP Arena on Friday. The win put the MAAC-leading Saints back in the win column, improving to 7-1, while the Mount skid to 2-6 in the league. Siena closed out the game on a decisive 20-4 game-ending run over the final 9:48 to cap off a 35-19 second half in the win. The win was also the largest at home of the season for the Saints who boast a 6-1 home record this season. Freshman Michael Eley poured in a career-high 20 points, Javian McCollum added 17 points, and Jared Billups stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four blocks for Siena. Jedy Cordilia paced the Mountaineers with a career high 16 points, while Jalen Benjamin finished with 14 points and Dakota Leffew scored 11 in the game.
