INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA released the regional brackets for the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament Monday afternoon, and Rider University will be travelling to Conway, SC to face the no. 10 host Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. The other two teams playing in the double-elimination regional are Duke and UNC Wilmington.
The Broncs punched their ticket into the tournament by going 3-1 in the MAAC Tournament, reaching the Championship series through the winner's bracket before defeating top-seeded Fairfield, 18-4, to clinch the MAAC Championship.
Scott Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) hit three home runs, including two in one inning in the winner-take-all championship game to earn tournament MVP honors. Frank Doelling (Riverside, NJ/Riverside[Rowan College of Burlington County]), Brian Young (Neptune, NJ/Communication), John Volpe (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall), and Luke Lesch (Gloucester Twp., NJ/Gloucester Catholic) also made the All-Tournament Team.
Coastal Carolina earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after falling in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Baseball Championship to Louisiana. The host Chanticleers enter the tournament with a 39-19 record. They are led by catcher Caden Bodine, who was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in addition to earning First-Team All-Sun Belt honors. In Coastal Carolina's lone action against MAAC competition this season, the Chanticleers topped Fairfield 14-7 to open the season in February.
Rider and Duke met less than a month ago with the team's splitting a pair of one-run games. The Blue Devils finished the season with a 35-21 record and earned an at-large bid after falling to NC State and Miami in the ACC Championship. UNC Wilmington and the Broncs have met just twice, once in 1997 and the other in 2000 with the Seagulls taking both meetings. The Seagulls qualified for the NCAA Tournament this season by going 3-0 in the CAA Championships to earn the conference's automatic bid.
