ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (Mar. 11, 2024) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), today announced the 2023-24 Women’s Basketball All-MAAC Teams, as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.
Leading the All-MAAC First Team were unanimous selections, Sisi Eleko from Canisius and the Fairfield duo of Meghan Andersen and Janelle Brown. Joining the three on the first team were Siena’s pair of Elisa Mevius and Teresa Seppala.
One of the five members of the All-MAAC First Team will be honored as the 2024 MAAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
The only player in the MAAC to average a double-double on the year, Canisius’ sophomore forward Eleko finished the regular season with 16.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Both her scoring average and rebounding average led the league, while her 16 total double-doubles were also the most by any player in MAAC during 2023-24 and was the 19
th highest quantity in the country. A native of Montreal, Canada, Eleko attempted the conference’s most free throws (100), and also sat atop of the league leaderboard in total points (465), total rebounds (312), and defensive rebounds per game (8.0). Additionally, her defensive rebounding average ranked eighth in the NCAA. Eleko earned her second career postseason accolade, adding to her All-Rookie selection from last season.
Andersen was one of the most dynamic freshmen in the MAAC and country this season, posting 15.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. She ranked second in the league in points, 17
th in rebounds, third in blocks, and 12
th in steals. Andersen connected on .528 percent of her field goals and .372 percent of her three-pointers, good for second and seventh in the conference, respectively. She won a MAAC-leading 11 Rookie of the Week awards in 2023-24, the most weekly honors among all women and men players this season. The 11 Rookie of the Week honors tied for the second-most in conference history with Marist's Rachele Fitz who accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Andersen was recognized as one of just 40 selections to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Player of the Year and she was also the only freshman ever to be named a Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Semifinalist.
The only upperclassmen voted to the All-MAAC First Team, Brown appeared and started in all 29 games this season for nationally ranked Fairfield. A senior guard from Middle Island, NY, Brown averaged 13.3 points, good for eighth in the conference, pulled in 4.3 rebounds, handed out 3.6 assists, the fifth-most in the MAAC, and had 2.5 steals, the third best mark in the league. She was one of the MAAC’s most efficient shooters, making .584 percent of her shot attempts and .474 percent of her three-pointers, both of which led the league. This is Brown’s second all-league selection, with her spot on the All-MAAC Third Team last season. Moreover, she was eighth in assist to turnover ratio and her 72 total steals were also third in the MAAC.
Last season’s Rookie of the Year, Mevius continued her tear at the collegiate level for Siena producing on the court both offensively and defensively. On the offensive side of the ball, she scored 11.9 points and distributed 5.0 assists. Defensively, Mevius collected 4.3 steals per game and grabbed 6.6 rebounds. She was the league leader and ranked second in the nation in steals, and her assists average and assists total (140) each led the MAAC. Mevius’ scoring average was 13
th among the league leaders, her rebounds were 12
th, and her .463 field goal percentage was eighth. She set the MAAC individual single-season record for steals this season with her 121 steals and she is the only player in the MAAC to record a triple-double on the year after her 16 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists performance against Rider this past week. In just two seasons in Loudonville, Mevius has now earned four MAAC postseason honors with her also claiming spots on the All-MAAC Third Team and MAAC All-Rookie Team also last season.
Siena sophomore guard from Finland, Seppala played in 26 contests for the Saints, making starts in all 26 of her appearances. She was Siena’s leading scorer, producing a stat line of 13.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per games in 31.5 minutes of action. On the MAAC charts, Seppala was fifth in scoring, 11
th in rebounding, and 11
th in blocks. She was second in free throw percentage (.798), seventh in field goal percentage (.465) eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.358), and tied for ninth in three-pointers made per game (1.7) additionally. A MAAC All-Rookie Team choice last season, she began the season by being placed on the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team.
All five members of the MAAC All-Rookie Team were unanimously voted to the lineup. They included Fairfield’s Andersen and Kaety L’Amoreaux, Quinnipiac’s Anna Foley and Karson Martin, and Saint Peter’s Fatmata Janneh.
One of the five members of the MAAC All-Rookie Team will be chosen as the 2024 MAAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year.
