No. 3 Canisius and No. 4 Sacred Heart will battle it out in Buffalo, NY, on Sunday afternoon for the 2025 MAAC Championship crown. The Golden Griffins and Pioneers each took down the conference’s top two seeds on Thursday, punching their tickets to Sunday’s championship final in upset fashion. Canisius battled No. 2 Quinnipiac to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, forcing the game to a penalty shootout to decide the match. The Griffs outlasted the Bobcats in penalty kicks, winning 4-3 to advance to the championship final. On Thursday evening, Sacred Heart faced crosstown rival, top seeded Fairfield to secure their place in the championship game. After a scoreless first half, the one and only goal of the game came in the 85th minute of the game from Sacred Heart’s All-MAAC First Team Forward, Morgan Bovardi, on an assist by All-MAAC Second Team Forward, Shea Kelleher. This marks Sacred Heart’s first championship appearance since joining the conference, while Canisius returns to the title game for the first time since 2010, when the Griffs fell to Siena 1-0 in overtime. Canisius’ only other championship appearance came in 1994, when they fell to former MAAC member Loyola, 2-1. Canisius and Sacred Heart met earlier this season in mid-September in Fairfield, CT, where the Pioneers earned a 3-1 victory. The two teams will clash again on Sunday afternoon, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
