Iona’s Akametu and Merrimack’s Kennedy Win Final Air Force Reserve MAAC Men’s Basketball Weekly Awards of Season

Kosy Akametu led the Gaels to a pair of pivotal victories to close the regular season, earning wins at home against Rider on Friday and on the road at archrival Manhattan on Sunday. Over the two-game stretch, Akametu averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists while shooting an efficient 56.5 percent from the field. He was dominant from long range, connecting on 66.7 percent of his three-point attempts (6-for-9), and converted 83.3 percent from the free throw line (5-for-6). In Friday’s win over Rider, Akametu poured in a team-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds, shooting 7-for-11 from the floor in a commanding performance. He followed that effort with 15 points and eight rebounds against Manhattan, finishing just one point shy of the team lead while shooting 3-for-6 from two-point range and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Across the two games, Akametu knocked down six consecutive three-pointers, providing timely scoring and momentum in both victories.
 
Rookie of the Week
Kevair Kennedy, Merrimack

In two wins to finish the 2025-26 season, freshman Kevair Kennedy scored 41 points (20.5 ppg), had 11 rebounds (5.5 rpg), and 9 assists (4.5 apg). Kennedy opened up the last regular season week of play with a 25 point day at Canisius. He shot a career best 80% from the field going 8-for-10. he came down with six rebounds for the second straight game. In a dominant win over Niagara on Sunday, Kennedy scored 16 points, and shot over 50% for the second straight game. He put up seven assists for the seventh time this season to go with five rebounds. He has scored in double-figures in 29 straight games. Seven of his last nine games Kennedy has score over 20 points.
 
The 2025-26 campaign culminates with the 2026 Air Force Reserve MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships from March 5-10 at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. 2026 will be the seventh consecutive year Boardwalk Hall will host the annual championship dating back to 2020. For the second straight season, the championship field will feature the conference's top 10 teams. Additionally, with the shift of the basketball championship schedule to a week earlier, the women’s championship game will be a standalone contest on Monday, March 9, while the men’s championship game will air live nationally on ESPN or ESPN2 on Tuesday, March 10.
