2022 MAAC Volleyball Championship Quarterfinal Recap; Semifinals to be held Friday

Lake Buena Vista, FL (Nov. 17, 2022) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Volleyball Championship quarterfinal round took place Thursday, November 17. Top seeded Fairfield University took on eighth seeded Niagara in the first match of the day. No.4 Canisius and No. 5 Siena played in the second match. The third quarterfinal game went on between No. 2 Marist and No. 7 Rider, and the final quarterfinal contest of the day was with No. 3 Iona and No. 6 Quinnipiac.

Top seed Fairfield University defeated No.8 seed Niagara University in four sets in the 11am quarterfinal match. Fairfield will move on to the semifinal round where they will face the No. 5 seed Siena.

  • Blakely Montgomery led all players with 35 assists in the match.
  • MAAC Player of the Year KJ Johnson recorded 20 points on the day, including 19 kills.
  • Kyla Berg totaled 28 digs in the contest.
  • Fairfield improves to 24-6 on the season and will face Siena in the semifinals on Friday.

  • Bella Peroni had 16 digs in the contest.
  • Liana Tolliver led Niagara with 14.5 points.
  • Taylor Allen led Niagara with six blocks.

In the second quarterfinal contest of the day, No. 5 seed Siena upset the No. 4 seeded Canisius in three sets. Siena advances to the semifinal round where they will face off with top seeded Fairfield University.

  • Emily Wunder led Siena with 16.5 points in the contest, recording 15 kills.
  • Claire Isaksen recorded 43 assists in the match.
  • Gracie Halley had 31 digs on the day for Siena.
 
Canisius Notes and Notables
  • Canisius finishes the season 13-15 overall, with a 11-7 in conference record.
  • Kara Zaucha led Canisius with 14 kills and 10 digs, her seventh double-double of the season.
  • MAAC Rookie of the Year Ella Bourque had 32 assists in the contest.
  • Bree Long recorded 18 digs on the day.

Marist secured the second upset of the day as they took down Marist in three sets. Marist will move on to the semifinal round where they will play Iona/Quinnipiac University on Friday.

  • Carley McAleavey led Rider with 14.5 points in the match.
  • Julia Slivka recorded 22 assists on the day.
  • Jenna Amaro led Rider with 13 kills in the game.
  • Rider improves to 11-19 overall and 7-11 in MAAC play.
 
 
Marist Notes and Notables
  • Marist finished the season with a record of 18-11 overall, and 14-4 in MAAC competition.
  • Sasha van der Merwe led Marist with 13.5 points in the game.
  • McKinley Fox led Marist with 21 assists on the day.

Quinnipiac scored an upset win over Iona in the last quarterfinal game of the day. Quinnipiac got past Iona in four sets and will play No. 7 seed Rider in the semifinals on Friday.  
 
Quinnipiac Notes and Notables
  • Damla Gunes led all players with 38 assists on the day.
  • Aryanah Diaz had 23 digs in the match.
  • Ginerva Giovagnoni led all players with 21.5 points in the contest.
  • Nicole Legg led Quinnipiac with 6 blocks in the match.
 
 
 
Iona Notes and Notables
  • Emma Jacobs had 15 kills for Iona.
  • Tamara Pichardo led Iona with 21 assists in the match.
  • Iona finishes the season 17-12 overall, after going 12-6 in conference play.
 

The semifinal round will take place on Friday with No. 1 Fairfield taking on No. 5 Siena in the first match of the day at 12pm. No. 6 Quinnipiac will play No. 7 Rider in the second semifinal contest at 2:30pm. Both semifinal matches will be aired on ESPN+.


The 2022 MAAC Volleyball Championship takes place from November 16 through 19 at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The 10-team, single-elimination championship will feature four rounds of action with the opening round taking place on Wednesday, November 16, followed by the quarterfinals on Thursday, November 17, the semifinals on Friday, November 18, and concluding with the championship match on Saturday, November 19.
