2022-23 MAAC Men’s Basketball Season Tips Off Today

EDISON, NJ (Nov. 7, 2022) – The 2022-23 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball regular season tips off today Monday, November 7 with nine teams in action between 7-8 p.m. All 11 member schools will take the court on opening week, with the other two squads opening on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 8 and 9.
 
A pair of teams get the season underway at home with reigning MAAC Regular Season champion, Iona University and reigning MAAC Tournament champion and Elite Eight participant, Saint Peter’s University both beginning their respective seasons at 7 p.m.
 
The Gaels will welcome Penn to the Hynes Center. Led by Hall of Famer and 2022 MAAC Coach of the Year Rick Pitino and preseason All-MAAC selections Nelly Junior Joseph and Walter Clayton Jr., Iona was selected as the preseason favorites in 2022-23. The Gaels own a league-leading 13 MAAC titles heading into the new campaign.
 
The Peacocks begin their season with in-state foe NJIT. Last season’s March Madness Cinderella team, Saint Peter’s enters this year under new leadership with head coach Bashir Mason and 2021-22 All-Rookie Team selection Jaylen Murray looking to build off of last season’s run.
 
Taking the hardwood on the road in the seven o’clock hour will be Manhattan College, MAAC newcomer Mount St. Mary’s University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, and Siena College.
 
The season opens for the Jaspers at Atlantic-10 contender VCU; the first ever meeting between the two programs.
 
MAAC newcomer Mount St. Mary’s University travels to West Virginia for its season-opener for the fourth time in its program history. The Mountaineers will look to begin a new era in the conference after having much success in the NEC under fourth year head coach Dan Engelstad, with the Mount St. Mary’s winning the 2021 NEC Championship under his guidance and earning an NCAA berth.
 
Niagara University takes on Maryland of the B10. Niagara, fourth year head coach Greg Paulus and all-conference selection Noah Thomasson will lead the Purple Eagles in 2022-23 after three-straight trips to the MAAC quarterfinals.
 
Quinnipiac University heads to fellow New England foe, Rhode Island to begin its campaign. A MAAC semifinalist a season-ago, the Quinnipiac Bobcats return unanimous Preseason All-MAAC First team selection Matt Balanc and Third team honoree Dezi Jones as the leaders for Baker Dunleavy.
 
The last squad to take the floor at 7 p.m. will be Siena College at Holy Cross for the inaugural game of a new four-year series against the Patriot League foe. The Saints, with head coach Carmen Maciarello at the helm of his alma mater, have finished no worse than third in the conference since he took over three seasons ago, which included back to back regular season titles in 2019-20 and 2020-21.
 
Canisius will be the third and final home team on opening day, hosting Youngstown State at 7:30 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs are led by head coach Reggie Witherspoon and preseason all-league choice Jordan Henderson.
 
The final team in action on opening night will be Fairfield University, opening its stanza in primetime at 8 p.m. on the road visiting Wake Forest. Coach Jay Young along with preseason All-MAAC First Team big, Supreme Cook and Third Team guard Jake Wojcik will guide the Stags in 2022-23.
 
On Tuesday, November 8, Rider University gets underway at Providence from the Big East. The Broncs and Friars will tip at 6:30 p.m. Two-time MAAC Coach of the Year Kevin Baggett enters his 11th season with the Broncs and he returns one of the league’s most experienced lineups with the preseason all-league trio of Dwight Murray Jr. (First Team), Mervin James (Third Team), and Allen Powell (Third Team).
 
The final MAAC men’s unit to start its respective season will be Marist College, which opens up 2022-23 at home in Poughkeepsie, NY against American on Wednesday, November 9. This game will be a return game following last year’s season-opener between the two sides at American. The Red Foxes’ head into their fifth season under head coach John Dunne.
 
2022 MAAC/ASUN Dublin Basketball Challenge
The third installment of the MAAC/ASUN Challenge will make its way across the pond to Dublin, Ireland, with the annual event taking place November 18 and 19 at National Basketball Arena. The 2022 MAAC/ASUN Challenge field will include Niagara and Rider representing the MAAC and Central Arkansas and Stetson of the ASUN.
