PHILADELPHIA, PA (Mar. 27, 2022) – 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball champion, Saint Peter’s, magical run in the NCAA Men’s Basketball March Madness Tournament came to an end on Sunday at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the Elite Eight. The Peacocks dropped the contest to No. 8 North Carolina, closing out the best NCAA postseason run by any MAAC program.
After making MAAC history as the first MAAC men’s program to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, the Peacocks took it one step further by becoming the first No. 15 seed ever – and lowest seeded team in NCAA history – to advance to the Elite Eight after outlasting No. 3 Purdue 67-64 on Friday night in the round of sixteen. The win made the Peacocks the first team in the conference (men or women) to advance past the Sweet Sixteen.
Saint Peter’s, which had never won an NCAA game entering 2022 (0-3), won three tournament games during its run, defeating No. 2 Kentucky, No. 7 Murray State and No. 3 Purdue, the most wins in a single NCAA Tournament by any MAAC men’s or women’s team in the league’s 41-year history. Prior to this season, MAAC men’s teams had never won more than one game in a single NCAA Tournament and won a combined seven total games during March Madness since the 1980s. Additionally, a MAAC men’s team had not been in the win column in March Madness in over a decade, with Siena earning the last win during the 2009 campaign.
The Peacocks conclude the 2022 season with an overall record of 22-12 and rewrote the history books for Saint Peter’s University, the MAAC, and March Madness.
