ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (March 9, 2022) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced its 2021-22 Women’s Basketball major awards, as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches
Lou Lopez-Senechal earned the league’s top honor as she was selected as the unanimous MAAC Player of the Year. Lopez-Senechal led the MAAC in scoring (19.7 PPG) and at the end of the regular season, she ranked 24
th in the NCAA in scoring. Lopez-Senechal recorded double figures in every game this season but two; this included a 20-plus point streak of nine games that spanned the entire month of January. She recorded consecutive 30-point performances on February 26 and March 3. She also averaged 4.7 rebounds per game, shot 45 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc which led the MAAC.
Iona’s Juana Camilion was selected as the 2021-22 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. The junior guard out of Palma De Mallorca, Spain totaled 57 steals this season, the fifth most in the MAAC for an average of 2.3 per game. She also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game and 14 total blocks, both ranked in the top-20 in the conference.
Fairfield’s Sam Lewis was selected as the 2021-22 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year. Lewis, a graduate student from Elkridge, MI averaged 7.0 points per game coming off the bench for the Stags. In her three starts this season, Lewis averaged 15.3 points per game which included a season-high of 18 points against Iona on December 30.
Niagara’s Aaliyah Parker was selected as the unanimous MAAC Rookie of the Year after she garnered eight MAAC Rookie of the Week honors while she led all MAAC rookies in scoring. Parker averaged 12.2 points per game and totaled 329 points. She also grabbed 6.4 rebounds per game which led the Purple Eagles, totaled 45 assists, and averaged 2.2 steals per game. The Cheektowaga, NY native scored a season-high 22 points at Rider on January 18; Parker totaled four 20-plus point performances.
