2022 MAAC Women’s Water Polo Championship – Semifinal

Wagner College defeated La Salle University in sudden victory overtime by a score of 9-5. At halftime the scores were knotted 3-3, but the Seahawks outscored the Explorers, 6-2. In the second matchup of the day, Long Island University defeated Marist College 13-7 behind five goals from Elena Camarena. The Seahawks and Sharks will face off in the 2022 MAAC Women’s Water Polo Championship on Sunday, April 24 at 2:00 pm on ESPN+. Wagner took both contests from LIU this season, defeating them on March 27 17-4 and on April 15 12-10.
Wagner Notes
- Wagner advances to the championship with a perfect record of 16-0
- Sofia Diaz Alvarez and Andrea Arias both contributed three goals each for the win over La Salle
- Andrea Arias got Wagner on the board with the only two goals of the first quarter
- The Seahawks picked up momentum in the third quarter with a huge 4-0 run to pull ahead 7-3
- Wagner pulled away from La Salle in the third quarter with the two goals from Co-Offensive Player of the Year junior Abbey Simshauser, Malia Josephson, and Sofia Diaz Álvarez each added one of their own
- Wagner held the Explorers scoreless through majority of the second half only allowing three goals
La Salle Notes
- Francesa Co’ and Kalista Hyham led the Explorers in goals with two goals apiece
- Co’ fired off a team-high eight shots at the goal
- La Salle outscored the Seahawks 2-1 to end the first half
- Sarah DeFusco tallied one goal to be one of two scorers for the Explorers
- Kalista led the team in exclusions drawn with five and led assists with two
- Co’ had a team-high with two steals and two blocks
- Emma Gurasich added 10 saves, one assist and one steal
LIU Notes
- Jessica Dean contributed four total goals, two were assists from Hinrichs, while the other two were assisted by Dominguez
- Elena Camarena scored five goals
- The Sharks shot 48.1% from the field with 27 shots taken
- Paola Dominguez and Kate Hinrichs scored two goals apiece
- Julia Zebak recorded 10 saves in 32 minutes in goal for the Sharks
- LIU recorded 11 exclusions

- Myriam Lizotte scored three goals
- 2022 MAAC Rookie of the Year, Madeline Schultz scored her 110th goal of the season against the Sharks
- India Alter opened the second half for the Red Foxes with a goal
- Marina Hyham recorded eight saves in 32 minutes in goal for the Red Foxes
- Fallon Burnworth added three steals, one goal and one assist
