2021-22 MAAC Commissioner’s Cup Final Standings Announced

EDISON, NJ (June 8, 2022) – Monmouth University and Fairfield University have claimed the 2021-22 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Commissioner’s Cups, the league announced today. For the second consecutive year Monmouth has won both the Overall Commissioner’s Cup and the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup, while Fairfield captured its second Women’s Commissioner’s Cup over the past three seasons.

“I would like to congratulate Monmouth University, Athletic Director Jeff Stapleton, its student-athletes, coaches and administrators on winning the 2021-22 Overall Commissioner’s Cup and Men’s Commissioner’s Cup in their final year in the conference,” noted MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “Monmouth’s overall athletic program has excelled and has proven to be a winning institution since its first season in the league in 2013 by claiming its seventh Overall Commissioner’s Cup and sixth Men’s Commissioner’s Cup. Winning for the seventh time reinforces the view that Monmouth has a deep and talented athletic program. Fairfield University is also to be congratulated on winning its 10th overall Women’s Cup” added Ensor. “The achievements of these two programs across the breadth of their sports programs is matched by their student-athlete’s academic success that aligns with the MAAC’s commitment to athletic and academic success in the conference’s athletic programs.”

The MAAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 23 championships conducted within the MAAC. Only the scores from Men’s & Women’s Basketball, plus the top six men’s and top six women’s scores are used to determine an institution’s total points.

Monmouth’s MAAC Commissioner’s Cup total, increased to 15 with the both the overall and men’s crowns in 2021-22. The overall title marked the Hawks seventh in the past eight seasons, while the men’s title was the sixth for the program. During the academic year, Monmouth claimed MAAC Championships in women’s soccer, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s tennis, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field. The Hawks also claimed MAAC Regular Season titles in women’s soccer, men’s tennis, and women’s lacrosse.

“At the start of the academic year it is always a goal of our department and University to win the MAAC Commissioner’s Cup and I am extremely proud that we have done that for the seventh time,” said Monmouth Director of Athletics Jeff Stapleton. “We wanted to close out our time in the MAAC by keeping the cup home in West Long Branch and our student-athletes, coaches and staff are to be celebrated for their hard work and dedication. I want to also congratulate our male student-athletes who took home the men’s cup for the sixth time.”

For the second time in three seasons, Fairfield took home the women’s title. The 2021-22 women’s cup was the program’s 10th, second-most among current MAAC members, and it was MAAC Commissioner’s Cup number 17 total for the program, having previously earned four overall cups and three men’s cups. This season, the Stags captured MAAC Championships in women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, and women’s lacrosse, while securing MAAC Regular Season crowns in women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.

“We are very proud to have earned the MAAC Women’s Commissioner’s Cup for the second time in three years,” said Fairfield University Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann. “While we were led by the trio of MAAC Champions in volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse, this award is a department honor and a testament to the culture of excellence and championship mindset established and fostered by all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff.”
