Iona Clinches MAAC Men’s Basketball Regular Season Title and Locks up No. 1 Seed to Highlight Sunday’s Action

EDISON, NJ (Feb. 27, 2023) – Defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball regular season champion Iona University, clinched its second straight – MAAC-leading 13th overall – regular season conference title following a victory over Siena College on Sunday to highlight the afternoon. The Gaels lock up the No. 1 seed in the MAAC Championship field following the day’s leagues results.

Canisius defeated Fairfield 64-51 in MAAC action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins fourth victory in their last five games, improved the team to 7-12 in league play, while the Stags fell to 8-11 in the conference following their third-straight loss. Canisius took a 6-0 lead and scored 10 of the game's first 13 points to start the game before building a lead of 28-13 and 30-18 to end the half. Fairfield cut the deficit to nine points with 13 minutes to play but never got any closer. TJ Gadsden led the way for the Griffs with his third double-double of the season, scoring 11 points to go with a career-high 14 rebounds while Jordan Henderson added 10 points. Caleb Fields led all scorers with 15 points and Supreme Cook added 14 points.

Iona never trailed in a 93-60 wire-to-wire win over Siena in MAAC men’s basketball league play Sunday. The win for the Gaels coupled with Rider’s loss clinched the outright MAAC Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Iona’s MAAC record improves to 15-3 with its ninth straight win while Siena drops to 11-7 in league play following an 0-2 weekend. Iona scored the first seven points of the contest and opened up a 23-5 advantage at the 13:37 mark before leading 44-21 at halftime. The Gaels kept the pace in the second half, leading by over 20 points for all but one possession in the final 20 minutes. Five Gaels scored in double figures with Walter Clayton Jr. and Daniss Jenkins leading the way with 18 points each, while Nelly Junior Joseph added 14 points, Anton Brookshire posted 12 points, and Berrick JeanLouis had 10 points. Michael Eley scored a team-high 12 points for Siena and Zek Tekin added a career-high 10 points. Iona increased its league-high mark to 13 regular season titles and captured back-to-back regular season crowns for the third time in history, the first since 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Manhattan completed a 21-point comeback victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon, winning 72-70 at M&T Bank Arena. Manhattan trailed by as many as 21 in the first half and 17 in the second half, but rallied back to take a 64-63 lead late in the game and ultimately winning the game at the buzzer behind a floater from Ant Nelson. The Jaspers MAAC record evens out at 9-9 and the Stags league record slips to 10-8. Nelson scored a game-high 21 points in addition to the game-winner to lead Manhattan while Josh Roberts added 13 points, and Logan Padgett finished with 11 points. Matt Balanc recorded 19 points to lead the Bobcats, while Tyrese Williams chipped in with 14 points and Dezi Jones added 13 points.

Mount St. Mary's upset Rider, 63-58, on the road at Alumni Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Mount used stout defensive to earn the win, holding the Broncs to 37.7 percent shooting from the floor and 25 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Mount St. Mary’s led by nine at break and came out strong in the second, extending its lead to 15 points three minutes into the half. Rider would slowly chip away at the deficit and eventually cut the game to two points, but the Mount would hold off the late attack and pull off the upset win. The Mount’s victory moves the team to 7-12 in league play while the Broncs stumble to 12-6 and remain in second-place. Jalen Benjamin led the Mount with 15 points, Dakota Leffew chipped in 14 points and Malik Jefferson added a double-double with 13 points and a season-high 14 rebounds in the win. Mervin James (14) and Tariq Ingraham (11) were the two Broncs in double figures in the losing effort.
 
Saint Peter’s (11-16, 6-12 MAAC) – 66 | Niagara (15-13, 10-9 MAAC) – 65

Saint Peter’s defeated Niagara, 66-65, behind a strong second half Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks league record improved to 6-12 with the road win, while the Purple Eagles fell to 10-9 in the MAAC. Trailing by nine at intermission, SPU held Niagara scoreless for almost five minutes to start the second. The Peacocks would use a 12-2 run to take the lead and never look back. The Purple Eagles pulled to within one point late in the game, but free throws down the stretch ultimately secured the road win the visiting Peacocks. Saint Peter’s was led by Corey Washington’s 18 points and Jaylen Murray added 13 in the win. Three Purple Eagles scored in double-figures with Noah Thomasson posting a game-high 22 points, followed by Aaron Gray with 13 and Braxton Bayless with 12.
