ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (Mar. 8, 2023) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), today has announced the 2022-23 Women’s Basketball Major Award Winners, as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.
Iona University’s Juana Camilion takes home both MAAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors for the 2022-23 season. The senior from Palma De Mallorca, Spain led the Gaels in scoring at 14.1 points per game and held averages of 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. The efficient floor general sat atop the leaderboard in virtually every MAAC statistical category, finishing fifth in free throw percentage (.803), sixth in scoring (14.1), sixth in assists (3.7), eighth in field goal percentage (.467), and eighth in three-point percentage (.363) while coming in at 15
th in minutes per game (31.5).
Camilion repeats as MAAC Defensive Player of the Year after claiming the award in 2021-22. The senior guard led Iona in steals on the season, totaling 54. Camilion ranked in the top 10 in the conference in both steals and blocks. She placed ninth in the MAAC with her average of 1.9 steals per game and tenth in blocks at 0.8 per game.
Quinnipiac’s Mary Baskerville was selected as the 2022-23 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year. Baskerville, a graduate student from Enfield, CT averaged 8.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game to help lead Quinnipiac to a 16-4 MAAC regular season record. On the season Baskerville led the MAAC in field goal percentage shooting an impressive .703.
This year’s MAAC Rookie of the Year award goes to Siena’s Elisa Mevius. Mevius was a unanimous All-Rookie Team selection and started 29 out of 30 games for Siena on the year to average 10.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. The freshman from Grunberg, Germany posted a career high 26 points in a 83-81 win against Niagara on 2/11, in which she hit the game winning three-pointer from half court. A four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week honoree, Mevius was the only player to earn Rookie of the Week and Player of the Week honors in the same week this year.
