EDISON, NJ (Apr. 23, 2025) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), today announced the 2025 Men’s and Women’s Golf Major Award winners, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
2025 MAAC Women’s Golf Champions, Quinnipiac University, swept all three major awards on the women’s side, while 2025 MAAC Men’s Golf Champions, Fairfield University, captured two of the three major awards to lead the men’s side.
Headlining major award winners was Quinnipiac’s first-year athlete, Sophia Fujita, who earned MAAC Women’s Player of the Year and MAAC Women’s Rookie of the Year honors. Over the weekend at the 2025 MAAC Championship, Fujita finished atop the individual leaderboard with a card of 217 (+1), shooting -4 on the first day, then +2 on day two, and +3 on the third and final day of the championship to earn the McLeod Trophy and individual title. Additionally, she was named to the All-MAAC First Team last week after a phenomenal first season in Hamden, after competing in seven tournaments in the 2024-25 campaign and was ranked 764
th nationally heading into the postseason.
Quinnipiac head coach, John O’Connor was named as MAAC Women’s Coach of the Year by his peers for the fourth time during his tenure. The Bobcats won the 2025 MAAC Women’s Golf Championship on Saturday afternoon at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course, finishing 13 strokes ahead of the next-best team to claim the conference title. Under O’Connor, Quinnipiac has won six MAAC titles, the most by any team in the conference since the Bobcats joined the MAAC for the 2013-14 season, having taken four of the last five conference championships. Moreover, O’Connor’s Bobcats landed a MAAC-high four players on the All-Championship Team and led the conference with three student-athletes on All-MAAC Teams.
MAAC Men’s Player of the Year was awarded to Mount St. Mary’s Aaron Sorkin. An All-MAAC First Team selection this season, Sorkin led the Mount in the latter end of the regular season by taking the individual title at both the Fripp Island Intercollegiate and the local Carpetbagger Classic, where he also helped lead the Mountaineers to team titles in both events. His lowest scoring round was a 63 which broke a school record which he attained at the Fripp Island Intercollegiate in round two of play. Over the weekend at the 2025 MAAC Men’s Golf Championship, Sorkin finished as the individual runner-up with a score 211 (-5) after shooting even with par on the final day and finishing just one stroke out first place. Sorkin finished with 16 birdies leading the entire tournament and 28 pars total. Sorkin's score of 68, shot on day two was the second lowest score of the entire tournament.
2025 MAAC Men’s Golf Championship McLeod Trophy winner and individual MAAC Champion, Tadgh Burke of Fairfield claimed MAAC Men’s Rookie of the Years honors. Burke finished with a 210 (-6) to beat Sorkin by one stroke. The rookie's best round was his first with a 67 on Thursday, and he never relinquished that lead for the remainder of the tournament. Burke is the seventh Stag to hoist the McLeod Trophy as individual MAAC Champion and the second in three years. Burke, who was tabbed on the All-MAAC Second Team last week, concluded the regular season with an average round of 75.6 (+3.9 to par) while playing in seven tournaments. He fired five rounds at par or better, including all three of his rounds at the Loyola Intercollegiate as he set the pace for the Stags at the tournament. Burke finished in fifth place overall at the Battle at Rum Pointe to help propel Fairfield to the tournament title.
Fairfield head coach, Doug Holub, was voted as the MAAC Men’s Coach of the Year amongst his peers. Holub guided the Stags to the 2025 MAAC Men’s Golf team title after carding an 862 (-2) over the three round event, to clinch the second trophy in program history. Fairfield won the title by two strokes over Sacred Heart, outgunning the Pioneers by seven stokes on Friday and two more on Saturday. The Stags only previous MAAC Championship as a team came in 1997. Additionally, on April 16, Holub’s Farfield squad placed a conference-leading four players to All-MAAC Teams, having two athletes garner first team honors and a pair, which included Burke, named to the second team.
