2025 MAAC Water Polo Postseason Honors Unveiled

EDISON, NJ (Apr. 23, 2025) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced the 2025 Water Polo All-MAAC Teams and Major Awards, as voted on by the leagues nine head coaches.
 
Villanova University led major award winners with a league-most three honorees, while 2025 MAAC Regular Season Champions, Wagner College, placed a league-leading four student-athletes to All-MAAC Teams.
 
2025 Co-Offensive Players of the Year were Sydney deVroedt of LIU and Carlota Alonso of Wagner. A senior driver, deVroedt scored 114 goals this season. She accounted for 56 steals, 55 drawn exclusions and 34 blocks. deVroedt was one of two players this season unanimously selected to the All-MAAC First Team. Wagner’s senior attacker Alonso scored 105 total goals and was a five-time MAAC Player of the Week. She also recorded 57 steals and added 44 assists.
 
Adrienne Grimes of Villanova was chosen as the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year. The center defender played in 31 total games for Villanova, including 12 MAAC games this season. Grimes recorded 16 steals, 15 field blocks, and had 36 exclusions against. She averaged 1.2 exclusions against per game, with only two penalties against in all 31 games. Offensively, Grimes scored 11 goals, shooting 42 percent and had 25 assists.
 
Villanova’s Riley Hull, secured 2025 Rookie of the Year recognition after having a record-breaking first season for the Wildcats. Hull posted 78 goals, 36 assists, 65 exclusions earned, and 24 penalties earned. She set the program record for most goals scored in a season by a freshman and tied for fifth all-time for goals in a season. Hull also entered the top 10 in program history for exclusions drawn in a season, a mark that ranks ninth on the team list.
 
The 2025 Coach of the Year award went to Michael Gordon of Villanova. Gordon led the Wildcats to a 20-11 overall season, with a 7-5 MAAC record, earning a berth into the MAAC Championship field for the first time since 2016. 2025 marked the second-straight season that Villanova has reached 20 wins and it was just the fourth 20-win season in program history. Additionally, his squad posted a 10-1 home record, and he has won 12 MAAC league games in his career, the third most among all coaches in Villanova history.

The 2025 MAAC Water Polo Championship will take place April 25-27, 2025. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
