2025 MAAC Water Polo Championship Action Opens Friday in Poughkeepsie, NY

 
EDISON, NJ (Apr. 24, 2025) – The 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Water Polo Championship is set for this weekend from Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27. The six MAAC teams taking the pool this weekend will include top-seeded Wagner College and Marist University, No. 2 seeds Iona University and LIU, and No. 3 seeds Villanova University and Mount St. Mary’s University. All contests during the championship will be hosted by Marist University in Poughkeepsie, NY
and will air live on ESPN+.
 
 
The Wagner Seahawks, the 2025 MAAC regular season title holders, are in pursuit of their 12th MAAC title. The Seahawks went 19-8 overall, producing 11 conference wins on the season. The Seahawks earned a first-round bye and will take on the lowest winning percentage victor of Friday's first round match in the semifinal round at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Wagner’s Carlota Alonso, MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, enters the championship after netting 78 goals on the season, putting her third in the standings.
 
Marist University, the No. 1 seed in the Blue Division, enters the championship with a 23-10 overall record and an 8-3 MAAC record. The Red Foxes are looking to secure their program’s sixth MAAC title. Marist also secured a first-round bye and will take on the highest winning % victor from the first round.
 
Game one of the opening round features Iona University and Villanova University. This year is the first time the Wildcats have made a MAAC Championship appearance since 2016. MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Adrienne Grimes, MAAC Rookie of the Year Riley Hull, and MAAC Coach of the Year Michael Godon, all hail from Villanova. The Gael’s Lola Trujillo and Sadie Sallas, who both notched spots on the 2025 All-MAAC teams, will help Iona in pursuit of this year's title. Trujillo leads the conference in steals (60) and goalkeeper Lilly Morris tops the standings in saves (191). The Gaels and the Wildcats tip off at 12pm.
 
 
This weekend’s Championship will also feature the No.2 scorer in the MAAC, Sydney deVroedt from LIU, who score 89 goals on the season. The Co-Offensive Player of the Year, along with the Sharks, will take on Mount St. Mary’s University in the second game of the opening round. The Mount is in pursuit of their program’s first MAAC title.
 
 
 
The 2025 MAAC Water Polo Championship will take place April 25-27, 2025. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
