Poughkeepsie, NY (Apr. 27, 2025) – The 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Water Polo Championship concluded Sunday afternoon in a fast-paced and physical showdown where Wagner held off a late Marist rally to secure a 14–11 win. The win was powered by a dominant offensive performance from Carlota Alonso and steady goalkeeping by Francesca Sena.
Wagner jumped out early, with Alonso netting the game’s first goal just 18 seconds into play. She went on to score four goals, including a third-period strike assisted by Alex Andrist that pushed Wagner ahead 11–8. Andrist was pivotal throughout, finishing with one goal, three assists, and two sprint wins that kept Wagner in control of possession.
Magali Ogg also contributed significantly for Wagner, tallying two goals, an assist, and drawing multiple exclusions, while Grace Coleman and Catherine Mentz helped keep the offense flowing with crisp ball movement and consistent pressure.
After trailing by as many as five, the Red Foxes cut the deficit to 13–11 in the fourth behind strong play from Kendell De Beer and Ella Baumgarten. De Beer finished with two goals and an assist, while Baumgarten recorded a goal and a helper. Liana Hunt contributed two assists and a key goal late in the fourth to energize Marist’s comeback push.
Goalkeeper Ines Sanchez kept Marist in the game with a string of clutch saves, including three blocks on point-blank chances from Coleman and Mentz. On the other end, Sena racked up at least five stops and denied several looks from Paige Naegle and Samantha Bentley.
The game saw a flurry of exclusions—both teams combining for over a dozen—with Wagner drawing several key 6-on-5s that led to goals. With the win, Wagner improves their late-season form, while Marist gains valuable experience as they look ahead to postseason play in the NCAA tournament. The Seahawks find out their opponent on Monday, April 28 at 8 p.m. ET. The selection show can be streamed on NCAA.com
