LOUDONVILLE, NY – Following the
tragic passing of head coach Liam Gleason last month, longtime assistant Tim Cox will take up the mantle of leadership of the Siena University Men's Lacrosse program. Cox, who assisted Gleason throughout his seven seasons leading the Saints, becomes the 11
th head coach in program history.
"Leadership shows up in many different ways, and during his time at Siena Coach Cox has been a steady and trusted leader within our program," said Siena Vice President and Director of Athletics
John D'Argenio. "Over the past five weeks, he has led our program through the tragic loss of Coach Gleason with humility, empathy, and compassion. Coach Cox is the right person to lead the program forward, and continue to grow what he and Coach Gleason built together over the past seven years."
The 32-year-old Cox, whom Gleason promoted to associate head coach back in September, served as the Saints top lieutenant and offensive coordinator since his hiring back in August 2018. Overall, Cox has spent a decade in the collegiate coaching ranks, including previous stints at Robert Morris (2017-18) and UAlbany (2016).
"It is with great humility, honor, and gratitude to be able to carry forth the legacy of Liam Gleason, and lead the Siena Men's Lacrosse program forward," said Cox. "I've seen firsthand what can be accomplished when a program is built on positivity, trust, and belief, and Coach Gleason's core values will continue to serve as the foundation for our future. As his legacy becomes part of the rich history and tradition of Siena Lacrosse, the culture we built together will remain at the forefront of my leadership, and I'm committed to carrying that standard forward and elevating it every day."
Cox helped guide Siena to its most successful season in a decade this past spring, culminating in the program's fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. The Saints achieved an 11-5 overall record and claimed a share of the MAAC regular season title with a 7-1 league mark. Siena earned the program's first national ranking in 14 years, checking in at No. 20 in both the USILA Coaches' Poll and Inside Lacrosse KANE Media Poll on May 5.
Cox coordinated an exemplary offensive unit which ranked fourth nationally this past season in both points per game (22.50) and assists per game (8.75), seventh in shot percentage (.322), and eighth in scoring (13.75). He aided in the development of both USILA and USA Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American and unanimous MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Pratt Reynolds – who broke both the program career (170) and single-season (57) goals scored record while finishing third nationally in goals per game (3.56) – and First Team All-MAAC honoree Ryan McCarthy, who broke the program single-season record for assists (50), while finishing second nationally in assists per game (3.13).
Overall, Cox has helped lead the Saints to five consecutive MAAC Tournaments, highlighted by Championship Game appearances in two of the past three seasons (2023 and 2025). Siena has amassed 28 wins over the past three years, including a 17-9 mark in MAAC action during that time.
Cox matriculated to Siena following a two-year stint as an assistant at Robert Morris (2017-18). He helped guide the Colonials to a 22-12 record, highlighted by the program's first-ever Northeast Conference Championship in 2018, followed by an NCAA Tournament Play-In Game victory over Canisius.
Cox began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, UAlbany, in 2016. In his lone season on staff, the Great Danes secured a peak ranking of No. 4 nationally in both the USILA Coaches' Poll and Inside Lacrosse Cascade/Maverick Media Poll, while earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Cox played professionally in Major League Lacrosse for the Denver Outlaws in 2016. He was previously selected in the 2015 MLL Supplemental Draft by the Ohio Machine.
A 2015 graduate of the University at Albany with a Bachelor's in communications, Cox was a standout midfielder for the Great Danes from 2012-15, where he played under assistant coach Gleason for head coach Scott Marr. A 2015 team captain and Second Team America East midfielder, Cox capped his career a key part of three straight America East Championships and back-to-back NCAA Quarterfinal appearances. Cox appeared in 61 career games for UAlbany, totaling 52 points on the strength of 40 goals.
A native of nearby Schenectady, New York, Cox was a 2011 All-American while starring for Schenectady High. He amassed 240 career points for the Patriots, punctuated by a school-record 110 points his senior season.
Cox and his wife Anne are the proud parents of two-year-old son Cassius, and newborn son, Hayes.
